The first poster has been released for the lengthily-titled Seeking a Friend for the End of the World – but how much does this really reveal about this upcoming sci-fi comedy drama? TFR take a closer look…

Asteroid
No prizes for guessing the cause of Seeking a Friend...'s version of the end of days: an interstellar rock. The asteroid's rather casual descent is a sign that this film is probably going to be a little more focused on the 'seeking a friend' part, especially as it's hurtling right past Keira Knightley who still keeps her smile. Basically we're looking at Melancholia without, y'know, all the melancholy.
Big, old-fashioned, vinyl records
Ah yes, a subtle reminder that Seeking a Friend... is the directorial début from Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist writer, Lorene Scafaria, who has also penned the script for this film. Could this mean we're in for yet another saccharine tale of 'unlikely romance'? Or could it just be a sign that we'll be treated to genuinely great soundtrack? Fingers crossed for the latter.
Hoodie? Jumper? Shirt?
Really, all three? Believe it or not, this could be a sign of good thing. While Steve Carell is no stranger to being seen in a suit (The Office, Evan Almighty), his recent role as an un-stylish everyman who has been left by his wife in Crazy, Stupid, Love proves that he's a dab hand at that too. So let's just stick to what we know! Here's Carell playing an un-stylish everyman who has been left by his wife - perfect!
Converses
Hold up - is Knightley wearing Converses? You mean she's NOT starring in a period drama? Apparently, the A Dangerous Method actress is keener than Carell to avoid being typecast (again). In fact, every aspect of Knightley's poster get-up screams 'I'm versatile, you know!' and good for her. We can only hope that this kooky character won't see Knightley attempting her American accent, which, as those who caught her London stage appearances in The Misanthrope and The Children's Hour will tell you, is awful.
The End Is Coming Soon
It's vague, and only vaguely witty, but we'll let it slide. It's also another indication that this film is one that won't be taking itself half as seriously as Kirsten Dunst, which can only be a blessing. In actual fact, Seeking a Friend... is due to be released in the US on 22nd June, and may even arrive in the UK before the end of summer. Smack bang in the middle of 2012, if you know what we mean...
