Yes, that’s the same Evangeline Lily from Lost. However, who is Barry Humphries, you ask? Well, you may know him by another name – Dame Edna Everage.
For those living in the UK, it’s hard not to know who Dame Edna is. The crazy, pink/purple-haired woman with horn-rimmed glasses and a penchant for glitter and cheeky comments, she’s a much loved comic creation and is found everywhere from TV interview sofas to the recent royal wedding.
Now, Barry Humphries, the man responsible for bringing her into the world, and usually referred to as her manager, has been cast as the Goblin King in The Hobbit, a role of some significance. He’ll be playing the role in the same way Andy Serkis played Gollum/Smeagol in The Lord of the Rings, i.e. all mo-cap-suited.
Evangeline Lily will be starring as an elf by the name of Tauriel, a Woodland dweller who, thus far, has no real identity within the pages of the book (although fan-site TheOneRing does speculate that there are many unnamed elves living in Mirkwood that could fit the bill). Not a major part then, it would seem, but you never know. It could even be another Figwit!
Luke Evans (Immortals, Clash of the Titans) is also due to play Bard the Grim, so there’s a fair few faces being thrown in – lots of classic actors and some fresh-faced talent, as has previously been the case with Jackson/Tolkien productions. More casting news as it comes, though at this rate it’s hard to see how these films could go wrong.
