Disney has expressed displeasure over what they see as Johnny Depp’s ‘gay’ portrayal of Jack Sparrow. An odd move for a production company, especially in 2010, but there you go – and Depp seems more amused than puzzled!

Disney, long known for male-female romance plots and possibly the widest range of characters, some of them fairly camp by anyone’s standards, seems worried that Jack Sparrow, heartthrob of millions and pirate hero to children around the world, is a little too effeminate for their liking.

It’s a shame, really – after The Princess and the Frog featuring the debut of the first ever black Disney princess you’d think they’d have let controversial, offensive views like this go, but alas, this isn’t the case. Luckily for us, the actor getting the flak is cocky and suave enough to make his responses entertaining.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Depp had the following to say:

“They couldn’t stand him. They just couldn’t stand him… I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’ Depp reveals that he remained unfazed by the studio’s hysteria. “Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, ‘What’s wrong with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?…’ And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.”

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Depp tones down his performance, but here at TFR Towers we’d like Depp’s Sparrow to stay just the way he is – he’s the most original pirate ever, and Disney are lucky to have Depp on board, cause let’s be honest – if he left, the franchise would be left dead in the water, and it almost did before! Let that be a warning to you, Disney!
