If you thought a lion, a witch and a wardrobe was a strange combination for a film, wait until you see Disney’s upcoming winter wonderland film, which features a raven, an old sorceress and a troll.

Disney is set to release a magical winter epic called Frozen which is based on the fairytale, ‘The Snow Queen’ by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson.

The 3D film is due to be released November 27, 2013, but it will also be up against the release of one of Marvel’s latest projects, which is thought to be a sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger.

Animator, Glen Keane (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin) abandoned the idea of Frozen almost ten years ago and instead, worked on other films including Disney’s latest animated comedy, Tangled .

Frozen will be an adaptation of the story behind Kai, a boy whose mind is corrupted after cursed mirror shards pierce his heart and eyes. He is abducted by the Snow Queen and she keeps him prisoner in her ice palace. However, Kai’s sweetheart, Gerda, loves him so dearly, that she sets out on an epic quest to rescue him from the Snow Queen’s spell.

It has not yet been confirmed if Frozen will be a graphic animation like Tangled, or it will be a classic cartoon, like The Princess and the Frog.

The Snow Queen has been adapted into many books, short films, plays and even a comic strip. Plus, Erin Holt (director of the Theatrical Youth Ballet) turned this enchanting tale into a show in 1998.

According to Anderson’s book, the evil Snow Queen is the ruler of the snowflakes, which are also known as ‘snow-bees’. It will be interesting to see if Disney portrays the Snow Queen as a beautiful, yet evil witch, or if she will be an old, withered hag like many of the evil female characters are portrayed in Disney films. We’ll keep you posted!
