It looks like mob killer Richard “The Ice Man” Kuklinski’s biopic has found a cinematic doppleganger in the form of Michael Shannon, along with other cast members just announced.
When we spoke about this last September, we were firmly under the impression that star of Diner and The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke, was up for the role. This is a wild change of choice, though Shannon (Revolutionary Road and the recent Boardwalk Empire) and his Academy Award nominations will ensure we’re getting a performance worth the price of admission.
Also cast are James Franco (the recent Spiderman trilogy, Milk, 127 Hours and this year’s Oscar co-host alongside Anne Hathaway) and Benecio Del Toro as mob boss Roy Demeo. With big and very talented names like these popping up on the cast list, it’s sure to be one to watch.
The story of The Ice Man, a mob hitman who killed a mind-numbing amount of Mafia targets, had his story written by Phillip Carlo as the non-fiction book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. With an intense, easily dislikeable protagonist, this should be a haunting look into the reality of a man changed by his profession.
