If you think the idea of a chameleon played by Johnny Depp having an identity crisis is funny, then you’re likely to be very excited by the trailer for Rango.
Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski are long time collaborators on a film franchise that continues to draw audiences around the world. You may have heard of it: Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s one of the highest-grossing films on any annual movie calendar.
Now they’re embarking on a rather different journey – to bring to life a small lizard and a Wild West town full of animal miscreants in Rango.
The film focuses on Rango, a chameleon who’s having a bit of an identity crisis – not hard when you can change your appearance at will. He finds his way across a dusty plain and takes up residence in the western town of Dirt.
We can expect a journey of self-discovery, a big bad villain and lots of Mexican accents and cowboy themes. It looks like an ideal film for next spring, and coming out in March 2011, there’s more than enough time for people to get excited.
This could be the start of a new type of oddball character that’ll give Depp a refreshing change from Jack Sparrow. That said, with the wages he’s probably earning from it, no one’ll blame him for doing Pirates of the Caribbean: That Bad Pirate Bloke From the Tenth Film Again in a decade’s time.
What do you all think about Depp turning his pirate hat in for a bit of bug-eyed lizard fun alongside a huge celebrity cast (Alfred Molina, Timothy Olyphant and Bill Nighy to name but a few)? Trailer’s below, so check it out!
