It seems Universal’s Ron Meyer has decided to come clean about a few recent releases, stating that the studio has been making some “s****y movies”, recently.
“We make a lot of s****y movies… We set out to make good ones. One of the worst movies we ever made was Wolfman. Cowboys & Aliens wasn’t good enough. Forget all the smart people involved in it, it wasn’t good enough. All those little creatures bouncing around were crappy. I think it was a mediocre movie, and we all did a mediocre job with it.
“Land of the Lost was just crap. I mean, there was no excuse for it. The best intentions all went wrong… Scott Pilgrim, I think, was actually kind of a good movie. But none of you guys went! And you didn’t tell your friends to go! But, you know, it happens.”
Now, most people would think he’s committing career suicide, but I disagree. It’s genuinely encouraging to see the COO of a studio like Universal hold his hands up and say “some of our films weren’t great”.
Hopefully, this means that those greenlighting some of this stuff will take a bit of a confidence hit from this, but that’s unavoidable – if he thinks the film is bad, then that’s his opinion.
Well, unless he starts slagging off the last Spiderman trilogy, because his son-in-law, one Tobey Maguire, might get a little offended. Best to avoid that one. Go go honest film execs!
