We all know how it goes, the stars emerge gracefully from their limousines and saunter along the red carpet as everyone waits for that one juicy interview. This year at the BAFTAs, it will be Miss Piggy who will be getting all the gossip, and who better to flutter her eyelashes and fire the questions we all secretly want to ask.

Miss Piggy has proved that she can glam it up with the rest of the stars. The picture above shows her looking fabulous arriving at the premiere of The Muppets back in November, and now she will be preparing to be the centre of attention yet again. It has been announced that the glamorous piggy, who is the long-time love interest of Kermit the Frog, will be the official red carpet host for the BAFTAs.

These prestigious film awards will be taking place this Sunday, 12th February, and Miss Piggy will be right there on the front-line. It will be her job to bring back the interviews everyone is waiting for, and by all accounts she is not planning on holding back. She is reportedly especially looking forward to grilling the likes of George Clooney, Michael Fassbender and Jean Dujardin who are all up for the category of Leading Actor – only the best for our famous Muppet!

Miss Piggy has said that she “will be asking questions that only moi would dare ask” – which should certainly make for some entertaining viewing. We can’t wait to see what questions she has in mind to fire at the unsuspecting actors and actresses, as well as finding out who the winners will be. The BAFTAs will be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday, 12th February at 9pm and the BAFTA Red Carpet Show With Miss Piggy will air on Monday, 13th February.

The 84th Academy Awards are just around the corner, this will be the last year before the vote switches to electronic ballots in 2013. But experts have warned the switch will not lessen the risk of foul play.

Since the first Academy Awards in 1929, votes have been sent through the post. However thanks to their partnership with the company Everyone Counts, who develop software for internet elections, the Academy have decided to move their voting ballots to the web.

The move is intended to make it easier for members to vote. This way they can submit their electronic ballots wherever they are in the world.

Now ignoring the obvious point that many of the older members might not even have an email address, let alone know how to use an online voting system, computer security experts have warned that the new system will be vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Everyone Counts claim that their “multiple layers of security” and “military-grade encryption techniques” help keep voting honest and protected from less noble members of society. So naturally there has been deep scepticism from members of the computer sciences community.

“Everybody would like there to be secure internet voting, but some very smart people … can’t figure out how to do it,” said professor of computer science at Stanford University, David Dill, the founder of Verified Voting.

“If someone casts a ballot for best actor A and the vote is recorded for best actor B, the voter has no way of knowing the ballot has been altered, and the auditor won’t be able to see it either.”

Government elections do not allow online voting for this very reason, and while the Oscars do not hold the same significance, the Academy has prided itself on the secrecy of its voting for the last 80 years.

The 84th Academy Awards is to be held on 26th February 2012. Hugo, The Artist, War Horse, Moneyball, The Help, The Descendants, The Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close will fight it out for Best Picture.

What do you think? Will the votes be tampered with next year?

The RAFAs are out in force today, tipping their collective hats at a wide variety of cinema in a celebration of good British filmmaking and film criticism.

Some of the usual suspects have made the list – The Artist and Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady being two good examples – but there are some accolades that go to some great media. Here’s the list itself, starting with the awards given out by regional film critics:

Film of the Year: The Artist

Filmmaker: Michel Hazanavicius – director, The Artist

Screenwriter: Bridget O’Connor & Peter Straughan – Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Actor: Michael Fassbender – Shame

Actress: Meryl Streep – The Iron Lady

Rising Star: Tom Hiddleston – War Horse, Thor, The Deep Blue Sea, Midnight in Paris

Not too many surprises there, to be honest – the aforementioned films have had considerable critical buzz, and despite some people not too happy about The Artist revealing itself as a silent film, the regional critics have spoken. Now comes the UK public vote section of the awards, which may be ever-so-slightly different:

British Film of the Year: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Animated Film: Arthur Christmas

Family Film: The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

British Film Star: Robert Pattinson – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Film Blog: CineVue

Most Anticipated Film of 2012: The Dark Knight Rises

This is a list with a slightly different vibe – a little more focused on family and fun, and of course, R-Patz’s inclusion in the list proves it’s a public list – critics generally aren’t a fan of the Twilight series, and often by extension, anyone in them.

Next year’s RAFAs could look very different – there are a lot of major blockbusters hitting screens in 2012, and I’d wager Martin Freeman will take something home for The Hobbit, having been a British television mainstay for years. Oh, and no, we didn’t enter the RAFAs. That’s why there’s no “The Film Review” next to “Film Blog”. Seems unfair of us to enter if we’d crush everyone so utterly. But who knows, next year, we just might.

The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were held in Los Angeles on Sunday 29th January, and the event was sparkling with its usual amount of stars and congratulatory words. The awards, honouring outstanding performances over the past year, consisted of five film and eight television categories. What we all wanting to know though, is who won?

There were some surprises, The Artist did not win EVERYTHING, as is expected at awards this year. Although Jean Dujardin did pick up the award for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading role, pipping the likes of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio to the podium. The biggest winner at these awards was actually The Help (cast pictured above), with a total of three. These included Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture, and Octavia Spencer beating Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) and Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), among others, to clinch Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Leading Role.

A special moment was reserved for Dick Van Dyke to present Mary Tyler Moore with the Screen Actors Guild’s 2011 Life Achievement Award (pictured left). This award is designed to recognise both career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment, with previous winners including Ernest Borgnine, Clint Eastwood and Elizabeth Taylor.

Awards were also dished out to those in television series, including Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock and Jessica Lange for American Horror Story. The hilariously awkward Modern Family clinched a rather unsurprising, yet very well-deserved win, as the whole cast were recognised with the Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Comedy Series award (pictured right).

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and TV series Game of Thrones both received awards for stunt ensembles, which is well deserved seeing as they are both based in the supernatural world and it would be hard for us mere mortals to do some of those things…

There were plenty of gorgeous dresses and many awards. Brad and Ange were there, as well as couple Stacey Keibler and George Clooney. Among those presenting the awards were Kevin Bacon (pictured left), Bérénice Bejo and Natalie Portman.

Never say Martin Scorsese doesn’t love his stars. The iconic director has used his influence to secure Hugo star Blackie a nomination for a Golden Collar Award.

The canine star of Hugo, Blackie is a giant Doberman who plays a crucial and well executed part in the Oscar-nominated film as Sacha Baron Cohen’s attack dog. However the poor animal was left out of the nominations for a Golden Collar Award, much to the disappointment of his director. The Golden Collar Awards are given to performing dogs and the first annual awards ceremony will be held on 13 February at the Hotel Palomar, Los Angeles.

In a letter to the LA Times, Scorsese lamented Blackie’s snub in the ‘Best Dog in a Theatrical Film’ category, urging readers to contact the organisers of the awards in support of his canine friend.

“How could she not be nominated?” Scorsese wrote. He made reference to the Jack Russell Uggie, who has received two nominations for his roles in both Water For Elephants and The Artist.

“Uggie plays a nice little mascot who does tricks and saves his master’s life in one of the films, while Blackie gives an uncompromising performance as a ferocious guard dog who terrorises children,” Scorsese went on.

Challenging roles like this should get recognition he said, “I’m proud of Blackie, who laid it on the line and dared to risk the sympathy of her audience.”

In response to his rather eloquent argument, the event’s organisers Dog Daily News have said that: “Rather than engage in a war of words over the merits” of the two dogs, they will request the panel of 14 judges add Blackie as the sixth nomination … if she receives 500 or more write-in nominations via its Facebook page.

Scorsese certainly has the public under his thumb. More than 400 supporters have already submitted their nominations in the 24 hours since his letter was published, so we have no doubt the required number will be reached.

Other dogs in the running include: Denver from the comedy drama 50/50, Hummer from Young Adult and Cosmo from Beginners.

So, is this unfair or was Blackie snubbed? Let us know!

If you love watching something a little different to the mainstream conveyor-belt of tired ideas, then Sundance is for you. So which flicks were the best of Sundance 2012?

There’s quite a range of stuff here, and I’m super-happy that Indie Game: The Movie went away a winner, as the buzz about it in the week leading up to awards night was considerable – I even spotted Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich calling it “fantastic”.

If there’s one thing I will say, it’s that their awards stream – on their site - was horrible. Constantly cutting out and stuttering, trying to keep track of the ceremony was an absolute nightmare, at least in the UK – and that’s before and after troubleshooting my connection. Poor form, but I’m happy for both the Sundance organisers and those who won awards. Even happy for those who didn’t. Why? You got chosen for Sundance! So without further ado, the awards themselves.

Veteran British Actor John Hurt has been singled out by BAFTA to receive the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema!

Thoroughly deserved and a long time coming! British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) made the announcement on the 27th January ahead of their awards ceremony next month.

And John himself seems overwhelmed by the honour. “I know that film means a great deal to me but I had no idea that I meant so much to film. I feel very honoured,” he said after the announcement.

The Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award was introduced in 1978 to honour the great producer (and grandfather to Daniel Day-Lewis) Sir Michael Balcon. Now Hurt, whose most recent film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is an awards contender, will join fellow recipients: Mike Leigh, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jarman and Mary Selway.

Universally acclaimed for his acting talent, Hurt’s vast range of distinguished performances have shaped an impressive career spanning six decades.

He might be well known to younger audiences as the wand maker Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter franchise, the series which coincidentally won the same prize last year. Hurt had a supporting role in three of the films.

Away from Harry Potter however, he is no stranger to the British Academy, having won three BAFTAs and gained a further four nominations. A notable example is his Best Actor award for his stellar performance in The Elephant Man in 1981.

And that is just the BAFTAs. Aside from his two Academy Award nominations, he has worked alongside industry icons like Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier and Steven Spielberg, and played intriguing characters like Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four and Sir Richard Rich in A Man of All Seasons.

Speaking about John Hurt, the Chairman of BAFTA, Tim Corrie said: “John Hurt is an actor who is both exciting and fascinating to watch. He is one-of-a-kind, an iconic figure, and BAFTA is delighted to take this opportunity to honour his outstanding contribution to cinema.”

The actor will receive the accolade on Sunday 12 February at the Orange British Academy Film Awards in the Royal Opera House in London.

The history of early cinema is the flavour of the year as Hugo and The Artist lead this year’s 84th Annual Academy Awards, scooping more than 20 nominations between them.

Spielberg’s epic war film, War Horse and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have six nominations each, closely followed by Moneyball and The Descendants which each have five nominations.

This year, the Best Picture category has nine contenders – including The Artist, The Descendants, Moneyball, Midnight In Paris, War Horse and Martin Scorsese’s enchanting children’s film, Hugo.

Directors Michael Hazanavicius, Alexander Payne, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick and Steven Spielberg, are up against each other for the Best Director Award.

There is no surprise to see that Rooney Mara has made it to the Best Actress shortlist after her stunning performance in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. However, she will be competing against Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn, Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs and Viola Davis for The Help.

Demián Bichir and Jean Dujardin have been nominated for Best Actor, alongside British performer, Gary Oldman and American heart-throbs George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Interestingly, the Best Original Screenplay category sees the all-female, American comedy, Bridesmaids get a nomination. It will be up against Midnight In Paris, A Separation, Margin Cell and The Artist.

Melissa McCarthy has scooped herself a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Bridesmaids. Her hilarious role in the chick-flick comedy really brought the film alive, which means her competitors – Janet McTeer, Jessica Chastai, Octavia Spencer and Bérénice Bejo – have some tough competition.

It seems strange that Drive was left out of the major categories, only being nominated for Best Sound Editing. In addition, Speilberg’s Tintin has been snubbed for Puss in Boots and Kung Fu Panda 2 in the Best Animated film category. Plus, why doesn’t the hilarious Bridesmaids stand out as being Best Film-worthy, despite having managed to bag itself two nominations?

However, it is fantastic to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo achieve so many nominations; the stunning, icy, Nordic landscapes have put it in the Best Cinematography category.

The Oscars are only a matter of weeks away – the prestigious ceremony is taking place on the 26th February at the Kodak Theatre in LA. We are really excited to find out who the winners will be; we will keep you posted!

Italian actor and director, Nanni Moretti, has been named as the president of the jury at the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

Unlike last year’s choice of jury president, US actor Robert De Niro, not all of you will have heard of Moretti, but that’s not to say that he doesn’t know his stuff. Moretti was given recognition by Cannes back in 1994, when he won the award for Best Director for Caro diario (Dear Diary) – a Italian language, semi-autobiographical film, which also starred Moretti in the lead role.

He also won the prestigious Palme d’Or award in 2001 for his drama film, La stanza del figlio (The Son’s Room). A festival favourite, he’s also had four more of his films shown at Cannes over the years, including last year’s religious comedy Habemus Papam (We Have a Pope) – and so really, if you haven’t heard of him before, then more fool you.

Moretti served as a jury member at the 50th Cannes Film Festival back in 1997, and the festival organisers have been quoted as saying that Moretti’s films “are the incarnation of all the best in cinema over the past 30 years”.

Moretti himself has reportedly described being chosen to head up the jury as, “a real joy, an honour and a tremendous responsibility”. Other members of the jury are expected to be announced over the coming months.

Other directors to have taken on the role of jury president in the past include Quentin Tarantino, Wong Kai-Wai, Stephen Frears and Sean Penn. It’s safe to say that Moretti’s films tend to be a little less mainstream than those of De Niro, and it will be interesting just how niche this year winners are – the 2011 jury handed the festival’s highest prize, the Palme d’Or, to Terrence Malick’s experimental film, The Tree of Life.

The awards season is in full swing and with the Golden Globes out of the way, the nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards 2012 have been announced. The Artist is in the lead … of course.

Leading the pack is the hot favourite for Best Film: The Artist. The French masterpiece received 12 nominations in total, which include: Best Film, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Leading Actor and Actress acknowledgements for Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

The film is up against: The Descendants, Drive, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Help for Best Film.

Meanwhile Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is nominated in 11 categories, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo has nine, and British effort My Week with Marilyn boasts six nominations. The Help and War Horse scored a total of five acknowledgements apiece, while the Harry Potter crew will be pleased with their four nominations for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The nominees in the acting categories are a fairly predictable bunch. Dujardin is up against George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Gary Oldman for the Lead Actor accolade. And My Week with Marilyn‘s Michelle Williams is up for the Lead Actress title, with competition from Bejo, Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and Tilda Swinton.

The nominees for the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award, were announced earlier this month too, with an eyebrow-raising lack of actresses to vote for. This year our choice is between: Adam Deacon, Chris Hemsworth, Chris O’Dowd, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston.

On a plus note, the ceremony will be hosted by national treasure Stephen Fry instead of usual pick, Jonathan Ross. The ceremony will take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, Sunday 12th February 2012.
