There are some films which do exactly what they say on the tin. You’ll find no deep and meaningful metaphors at work – those snakes really are on a plane and, in the latest instance, a mega shark really is going head-to-head with a giant octopus…
Your imagination could probably come up with the plot unaided, but Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus’ official synopsis reads (cue standard trailer voice); ‘the California coast is terrorized by two enormous prehistoric sea creatures as they battle each other for supremacy of the sea’, which has, of course, got D-movie fans across the globe stocking up on popcorn already… If the title or plotline isn’t enough of a giveaway, a view of the trailer reveals that the shark in question jumps out of the water and eats Golden Gate Bridge before chomping on a Boeing 747 for desert – meanwhile the squid gets busy batting fighter jets out of the sky.
Inexplicably, the film goes straight to DVD, but anyone after a laugh should make the 26 May release date on their calendar. Let’s just hope no one hoping to rent Noah Baumbach’s Squid and the Whale gets hold of this instead.
