Ricky Gervais’ Flanimals spawns new film

It might be hard to admit whilst thinking of his smug mug, but there’s no denying that Ricky Gervais has a bit of a magic touch… The Office star has only just finished his feature directorial debut, The Invention of Lying, and now Universal-based Illumination Entertainment has snapped up the rights to his children’s book series Flanimals for a 3-D animated feature about a world inhabited by several species of creatures so ugly and deformed they become cute and cuddly. Naturally, Gervais will voice the lead character, an unfortunately sweaty purple creature who goes on a mission to change the world, whilst scripting has been handed over to The Simpsons’ Matt Selman.
In the meantime, Gervais can been seen (or, rather, heard) opposite Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
