Coraline

Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com

Imagine if Wonderland’s Alice had been a bit more sarky or if Oz’s Dorothy had ditched her ruby-red goody two-shoes and gone emo and you’ll get an idea of Coraline. The star of this eponymous 3D stop-motion fantasy adapted from Neil Gaiman’s book is a bored but inquisitive 11-year-old who has moved with her parents into an old rambling house in a remote part of Oregon.Rather than slipping into a tornado or rabbit warren, though, Coraline’s portal into a parallel universe comes via a hole under the wallpaper. There she finds are far more exciting world where her ‘other’ mother and father are far more caring and attentive – or so it seems… Since the flick is by Henry Selick (director of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas), it’s likely to give even adults a bit of a chill. That’s the beauty of the film; although it has moments that speak directly from childhood experience, it doesn’t condescend. Add to this a strong cast of voices (including Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French) and you’ve got a film for all to enjoy, which is just as well; Coraline took four years of painstaking craftsmanship to produce. Enjoy the results – even if you don’t have any younger siblings/nephews/nieces to drag along with you.
