Sitting down to watch anything to do with Star Wars makes most geeks excited. It’s by far one of the most creative, well-known sci-fi franchises of all time, if not the most well-known. George Lucas has, in his infinite wisdom, also decided that the Clone Wars, set between Episode II and III and covering one of the most important military campaigns in the galaxy’s history, is ripe for storytelling.

The opening double-bill, which hit Sky Movies HD at 5:30pm on October 23rd for anyone who’s eager to see it, didn’t focus solely on Anakin and Obi-Wan. Instead, we’re exposed to an area of the Clone Wars that many are curious about: the training and mental disposition of the clones themselves. Created from the DNA of now-dead and legendary bounty hunter Jango Fett (father of the infamous Boba), they are created and trained for war from birth.

The episode follows Domino Squad, a team of five clones who can’t work together. Arrogance, over-reliance on orders – the team’s not gelling together well, and with bad test results they face possible disposal. The clones are well fleshed out, if a little generic in character. Fives is, predictably, the fifth member, Heavy holds the heavy weapon, and Echo is the one always repeating orders. It’s for kids, so this allows them to differentiate, and it works well, though it’s hard to tell them apart visually.

Visually speaking, however, the art style is incredible. Lines so well drawn they look almost like real-life sculptures themselves, the show’s characteristic way of portraying everyone from the clones to Twi’Lek commander Ahsoka Tano, look well-defined and move smoothly and realistically. Well, as realistic as psychic knights who jump twenty feet higher than normal people can, anyway.

The story helps to establish the ongoing saga of conflict between Anakin and the forces of good, versus Grevious, the metal general, and his forces of evil. The double bill is a fantastic start to the series, and with a lot of themes based around teamwork, perseverance, bravery and commitment, not to mention loyalty, kids will walk away with a lot of good morals. For the adults, it’s sometimes a little patronising, but anyone who’s spent an afternoon with Dora the Explorer can tell you that much.

It’s a great way to introduce a whole new generation to Star Wars culture and lore, and one we at TFR severely hope continues down through the next few generations. Star Wars is a classic, and by removing live-action, writing simpler plots and using a lot of themes that encourage kids to do better, we’ll soon have another ton of people putting “Jedi Knight” on the UK Census in ten years. Until then, we’ll make do with Clone Wars, and it’s always welcome, in our book.

Hailed as being the best sci-fi film since ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Moon’ is the lonely story of Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who is coming to the end of his three year contract on the dark side of the moon. Working for Lunar Industries mining Earth’s primary energy source alone with no-one but robot Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey) for company, the film follows Sam’s last two weeks of isolation.Unlike many films of this genre, Moon isn’t about aliens or distant worlds – the main focus is on Sam’s mental state and his ever-loosening grasp of reality. After an accident on the moon’s surface, his hallucinations and visions become more and more frequent and his paranoia gives the film a dramatic edge not often achieved in sci-fi films.

What follows doesn’t just raise questions within the audience of what is going on in Sam’s mind, but also gives the character opportunity to ask some deep-searching questions of his own, in a similar existential vein to ‘I heart Huckabees’.

‘Moon’ is an accomplished film that manages to retain audience interest throughout. While there are not necessarily a huge number of jaw-dropping plot twists, the film maintains a level of suspense that is almost Hitchcockian, with unexpected and yet brilliant revelations.

‘Moon’ is the directorial debut of Duncan Jones, son of rock pioneer David Bowie. Showing some signs of being influenced by Kubrick’s ‘2001: Space Odyssey’, this really is the dark horse of 2009, despite its limited cinematic release. The portrayal of Sam is a challenge for Rockwell and one he rises to with aplomb, balancing a fine line between creating audience empathy and yet allowing us to retain a safe distance from this unhinged and isolated character.

An emotional rollercoaster from start to finish, Moon is just simply splendid.

Clearly not scared of facing the Pope’s wrath, Columbia Pictures is dishing out yet another Dan Brown adaptation for the big screen…

Penned by the writer before The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons acts as a prequel to famed mega hit novel – and so this time round we see Tom Hanks fighting off the years to play an ever so slightly younger Dr Robert Langdon. The intrepid Harvard symbologist still has the same kind of things to deal with though – mainly the small matters of murder, science and religion. Somebody’s gotta see to it.Ron Howard again takes directing duties but new additions include Scot-man Ewan McGregor, who stars as Langdon’s sidekick Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, and Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer, who landed the coveted role of Vittoria Vetra and plays this installment’s eye candy.

The cinematography is bound to be epic as it was in the first film, but one thing you shouldn’t expect is any holy Rome locations; the Vatican banned the crew from filming in its grounds or any church in the Italian city, describing the work as ‘an offence against God’. Is it an offence against the great screen gods though? Seeing as Columbia aren’t showing any advance screenings, you will just have to watch this space.

Possibly inspired by the successful reboot of the James Bond franchise, J.J. Abrams was tasked with making Star Trek cool again. It was never going to be an easy mission, but if the guy behind Lost can’t make extra-terrestrials seem plausible, there’s not that many who can…
Since the film acts as a prequel, one of Abrams’ first challenges was recruiting a new crew of actors to play characters who are now instantly recognisable. It’s therefore goodbye to oldie William Shatner and hello to relative newcomer Chris Pine, who might make the same impact on the film’s female audience that Daniel Craig did in Bond. Meanwhile, the part of half-human, half-Vulcan, bowl-haired Mr Spock has gone to Zachary Quinto – a guy who’s previously demonstrated his alien powers in TV series Heroes.

Much of the action takes place aboard the ominous interstellar cruiser, where the future captain of the starship Enterprise is still a young cadet. He’s not the only thing fresh and new though… Gone are the boxy stun guns and spray-painted toys. The $150 million budget has instead bought sleeker weaponry and costumes, not to mention the effects, which make the old ‘beam me up’ sequences seem like the work of kindergarten.

After a succession of disappointing TV spin-offs and features, this reboot might not only make fans proud to call themselves ‘Trekkies’ once more, but also bring a whole new audience.
