The pair co-wrote the script, which appeared on the 2008 film-industry-compiled Black List, which includes some of the best un-produced screenplays.

Despite the fact that both Pegg and Frost star in Paul, it will not be included as part of their ‘Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy’ – along with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – as it is not directed Edgar Wright. However, the pair will be joined by a fairly star-studded cast, including Jason Bateman, Jane Lynch, and Sigourney Weaver, as well as the voice of Seth Rogen.

Pegg and Frost play a pair of geeky sci-fi fans who go on a road trip through America. Whilst visiting Area 51, they unwittingly find themselves joined by Paul, a CGI extra terrestrial who insists on accompanying them on their journey. This, of course, prompts all manner of comedy capers – from avoiding pursuant federal agents to the accidental kidnap of a young woman and a misconstrued plan to return Paul back to his mother ship.

Sigourney Weaver has already described Paul as “a love letter to Comic-Con” – where some of the film is set and where the cast took part in an Q&A session. So, along with those who are already fans of the hilarious Pegg/Frost dynamic, this film is likely to have a large number of sci-fi and comic fans who will be just as excited about its release early next year.

Sly’s role in the production is not so much expendable as indispensable. Not only is he starring in the film, but he has also produced it and even helped write the script.

The plot sees a group of mercenaries who are sent to South America to topple a dictator, once ‘in country’ everything starts to go wrong and they find they have been set up. In fact, they are not just expendable, but The Expendables.

The movie features a list of famous tough men as long as 6ft 5in Swedish Universal Soldier, Dolf Lungren (who also happens to be in it).

Other members of this muscular ensemble include the UK’s own Jason Statham, scary-faced Mickey Rourke, Kung Fu expert Jet Li, old trooper Bruce Willis and even the Governator himself, Arnie.

There are those who see the cast itself as a cunning marketing campaign, as there seems to be a representative from each major US martial arts sector: Randy Couture is a UFC champ, Steve Austin is a WWF legend, and Gary Daniels is a kickboxer. There’s even a former NFL star, Terry Crews, thrown in for good measure.

Crews may well be right when he called the movie at a Comic-Con panel ‘the manliest movie ever made’.

An annual institution at the San Diego Convention Centre since 1970, Comic-Con now attracts around 125,000 fans who come together en-mass to celebrate what elsewhere might be a niche pastime. Or rather, that was the case… The fanboys were briefly pushed aside when Robert Pattinson mania hit the convention on Friday; the appearance of the New Moon actor and his co-stars undoubtedly draw the biggest crowd, but there have still been plenty of other highlights…

Avatar, James Cameron’s first feature in almost 15 years, was previewed prior to its Dec release with a 20-minute clip presentation and managed to create almost as much hype without a fang-toothed hottie in sight, while Tim Burton’s unveiling of Alice in Wonderland provoked as much attention – no doubt helped by the appearance of Johnny Depp. Terry Gilliam probably could’ve done with some of the actor’s magic at the panel for the yet unsold Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the film Heath Ledger was working on at the time of his death, which was later finished by Depp, amongst others, although he still managed to find a more captive audience than previously received in Cannes.

Two after Iron Man received it’s first big push at the same convention, Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr were back to present clips from the sequel on Saturday, although the convention went back to its less A-list roots for the final day, screening new Warner animation Green Lantern: First Flight and closing with Buffy the Musical. The studio execs might have long left by then, but it’s unlikely that the fanboys or RobPat fans will even noticed…
