If you’ve ever read anything by the master of surreal horror H.P. Lovecraft, you’ll know that stuff’s ripe for the 3D CGI treatment. Lucky you, then, because none other than James “Avatar” Cameron and Guillermo “Hellboy/Pan” Del Toro are taking it on!

It’s a pretty exciting revelation, and comforting to know that after a lot of pre-production, the story, titled “At the Mountains of Madness” is finally ready to move into the shooting phase. It’s been a confusing month for Del Toro fans, as his Comic-Con announcement told of his involvement with Haunted Mansion – not quite the Lovecraftian film everyone was hoping for.

The film, which sees a 1930s science expedition go wrong when they find something evil under the ice that tells of humanity’s rather alien origins (Alien vs. Predator: Requiem writers may now start shuffling their feet and whistling), sounds fantastic.

Interestingly, James Cameron, the man who famously never produces other people’s films, has also signed on – as the producer. Those wondering why he’s not busy making Avatar 2 (which does exist, so keep those 80p 3D classes) will be happy to know he’s bringing his expertise to the project as well.

With two big names in the mixing pot, it’s likely to be a blockbuster of a movie, and it’s gratifying to know that in an age of butchered comics turning into money-machines at the box office, someone’s taking cues from the master of… well, Lovecraftian horror!
