Taking the ‘found footage’ approach to this Misfits-style tale, Chronicle follows three high school friends as they exploit the supernatural abilities bestowed upon them after discovering a crater. They promptly set about using their powers of telekinesis, flight, and invulnerability to lift girls skirts and stab each other with forks – much as you might expect. However, as the powers get stronger, they begin to take on a much darker side which puts the group’s friendship to the test.

If you’re a fan of The Wire then you’re likely to recognise Michael B. Jordan, who’s best known for playing teenage drug dealer Wallace, as well as the character of Reggie Montgomery in US series, All My Children. He’ll be starring alongside Wasted on the Young star Alex Russell, as well as True Blood‘s Dane DeHaan, who will be taking on the apparently sinister role of Andrew.

Penned by John Landis‘ son, Max Landis, and directed by John Trank (who was behind Paranormal Activity 2‘s additional scenes), Chronicle looks like it’s certainly put it’s $15 million budget to good use.

It might be almost thirty years since Landis’ iconic horror-comedy, An American Werewolf in London, but with Simon Pegg playing William Burke alongside Andy Serkis as William Hare, his latest film, Burke and Hare, manages to mix murder and laughter just as perfectly as ever.

Pegg and Serkis provide a happy-go-lucky portrayal of the nineteenth-century serial murderers and, bless them, their Irish accents aren’t bad either. Whether they’re throwing drunkards down concrete steps or smothering the elderly with pillows, they’ll do it with such charm and a smile that you’ll be routing for them every step of the way.

Take Pegg, for example, he’s only behaving like a cold-blooded killer to win the fair hand of Ginny – a budding actress played by Isla Fisher, who has no idea that the production of her play is being funded through less-than-legitimate means. And besides, he is undoubtedly influenced by cheeky-chappy Serkis, who since he started knocking off poor unfortunates left, right and centre has seen his sex-life with wife (and accomplice) Jessica Hynes, improve quite dramatically.

There’s also the fact that they’re (sort of) killing their way round town to aid the science of anatomy. The pair sell their unusually abundant supply of corpses to one Tom Wilkinson, a lecturer at Edinburgh Medical College, who is well-cast as Doctor Robert Knox.

Throw in some slightly slapstick humour involving Ronnie Corbett as the leader of the utterly useless Edinburgh militia, and you’ll be laughing all the way to the morgue. Ok, so it’s not an entirely plausible plot, and if it wasn’t loosely based on real life it might sound as ridiculous as Fisher’s attempt at a Scottish accent (not very good), but somehow Landis gets away with it.

This might be partially to do with his romantic depiction of early 19c Edinburgh, which is pretty much one big sing-along party, with ales served in tankards by pretty girls with ringlets and corsets, and where even the most down-and-out of folks are still having a jolly good time.

And if that doesn’t distract you from the moral downfalls of this film, then there’s an array of famous faces that might. From Bill Bailey‘s brief role as narrator Angus, to Stephen Merchant popping up as a footman and Tim Curry as Knox’s rival, Dr. Monroe. What Burke and Hare lacks in credibility, it certainly makes up for in comedic talent, and in typical Landis’ style, there’s gore a’plenty, too.

London Zoo was the first to host one of the See Film Differently events that will go on to show one-off screenings of classic films in key locations.

The eerie dark and deathly quiet of the zoo provided the perfect atmosphere for the horror-comedy, and upon arrival we were treated to a private tour of the grounds. This included the bench from where a naked David Naughton stole a coat after waking up in the zoo following some full-moon-fuelled behaviour in the film…

After being sufficiently spooked, we were treated to an impressive exhibition of An American Werewolf in London props and memorabilia, complete with retro-style music and cinema snacks. It was movie fan heaven, showcasing everything from the prosthetics and technology which gave the film its innovative special effects, to storyboards and photographs from the film’s production.

After being ushered into the screening auditorium, we were entertained with a short talk from An American Werewolf in London expert, Paul Davis, followed by a clip from his documentary, Beware the Moon: Remembering ‘An American Werewolf in London’.

Finally, we sat back to watch the cult classic itself. The iconic site increased the thrill value for an excitable audience, and the screening certainly seemed to be enjoyed by all, suggesting that Volkswagen succeeded in their mission of ‘turning the camera on locations’.

The film about two 19th Century grave robbers, stars Simon Pegg, Tim Curry and Andy Serkis and various other great British actors, all of whom attended the London screening.

Wife of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, Isla Fisher also stars in the film, playing the love interest of William Burke (Pegg).

Last night Fisher turned heads, looking stunning in red, having given birth only two weeks ago.

She said: “I was actually pregnant during the shooting and I had severe morning sickness and I didn’t eat anything and I just vomited all the time.

“Simon Pegg is the least observant actor on the planet because he didn’t notice. I think he presumed I was just a typical Hollywood bulimic actress rather than the fact that I was severely sick.”

The film is directed by John Landis, the man behind the legendary Michael Jackson Thriller video and also An American Werewolf in London, which we are currently giving away tickets to see at a special Halloween screening.

Burke and Hare tells the real-life story of two men who steal bodies to sell as cadavers to an Edinburgh medical school, once they realise it is a very lucrative business.

The story of Burke and Hare has previously been made into a horror film in 1971, however this version is more of a black comedy.

Burke and Hare is released in UK cinemas on 29th October.
