Just when you thought Bruce Willis had taken his Untouchables and RED cheques and was thinking about some more reflective roles, Die Hard 5 gets the go-ahead and a director in the form of Noam Murro.

Die Hard reached an apex before the fourth instalment. Even with 4.0, the formula still worked, but the film had become so self-referential and tongue-in-cheek that it was hard to take it seriously (though Kevin Smith and Justin Long were admirably entertaining).

But it still pulls in the punters, and Die Hard 5 will be no exception. It’s been in pre-production limbo for a while, but now they’ve assigned a new director to the project, one Noam Murro.

There’s not a lot to say about the newest addition to Team Bruce – Murro directed Smart People, a Gatorade advert and the latest advertising campaign for the Halo franchise. It’s not a CV that’ll hit people in the same “ooh, action expert” way as, say, 4.0‘s Len Wiseman (the Underworld trilogy, notably), or the more-bankable-than-thou filmography of the original series director John McTiernan (Die Hard 1&2, The Hunt for Red October, Predator).

But a director’s a director, and even Wiseman was fairly unproven at big-budget blockbuster stuff that lay outside the realm of urban fantasy action. Murro’s got some colossal shoes to fill, but hopefully he’ll bring the same coy we’re-so-in-this-for-the-money humour to the fifth Die Hard that the previous film did so well. More on this as it comes.

Last night was the UK première of the animated 3D film Alpha and Omega.

The only star present at the première, which took place at the BFI Southbank, was Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere.

But she wasn’t alone as she was joined by an adorable wolf cub and its scarier-looking parent.

Alpha and Omega tells the story of two young wolves at different ends of their pack’s social order. Kate (Hayden Panettiere) is an alpha and the daughter of the main alpha male and Humphrey is an omega, the lowest order in the pack.

The pair are thrown together in a foreign land and the only way they can return home is by working together. Humphrey is hopelessly in love with Kate, who unfortunately must go through with an arranged marriage to another wolf. But could she end up falling for Humphrey?

The film features the voices of Justin Long as Omega, Christina Ricci and Dennis Hopper in his last film role.

Although the film failed to set the US box office alight, it is Lionsgate’s highest grossing animated feature so far.

Alpha and Omega will be released in UK cinemas on October 22nd.

Drew Barrymore’s latest film Going the Distance release date has been put back a week to September 3rd.

That just so happens to be the Labor Day weekend, which usually means the big bucks.

It is thought that the movie, which Drew stars in with her on/off boyfriend Justin Long, has been pushed back so it doesn’t have to compete with some films coming out the week before, such as Jennifer Aniston’s film The Switch.

Slightly late notice don’t you think? And will it make any difference and save the film from being a flop?

Sam Raimi made his name with Evil Dead in 1982 and his fortune a few decades later with Spider-man. He could pretty much go anywhere from there, although I’m sure long-time fans were relieved when he announced he was returning to his roots with a spine-chiller of a thriller.

And so we have Drag Me To Hell, a flick that follows the story of Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), and ambitious LA loan officer who has it all on a plate until she gets on the wrong side of an old lady facing financial ruin (did she not learn anything about not messing with gammy-eyed crazies from Hansel and Gretel?).

Now, I’m sure plenty of us have wanted to curse the odd loans officer in our time (verbally, at least), but I’d still say Alison doesn’t really deserve eternal damnation (or the plague of flies buzzing after her) for denying a mortgage extension. Still, with a spell cast over her she must race against the clock to break the curse until evil closes in and she’s dragged right in through the gates of hell.

As for the viewers, they’re dragged through a rollercoaster rather than cinema hell – just as long as they don’t expect too much.
