What kind of a name is Horrible Bosses? Bad Bosses would have been bad enough, but at least it’s alliterative; Rachael-from-Friends-Dyes-Her-Hair-Brown-and-is-Now-a-Totally-Believable-Bad-Guy even has a better ring to it than Horrible Bosses. Come on movie execs, what were you thinking?

The name may be bad, but this film definitely does what it says on the tin. A bit like Snakes on a Plane, it doesn’t disappoint with the content – the bosses are definitely horrible, just as there were certainly snakes on the plane.

Other than the truly appalling name, there really isn’t much to love or hate about this run-of-the-mill Friday night comedy. The cast is okay. Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and the hilarious Colin Farrell who definitely steals the show, are the ruthless employers of the film’s three protagonists. There are moments of pure comedy gold, though they might be few and far between, and the plot is original enough. The idea is that apparently most people will have fantasised about killing their bosses, (hopefully the latest winner of The Apprentice won’t be getting any ideas.)

This being said, as there are thousands of people worldwide struggling with unemployment, many of them may find it hard to sympathise with these disgruntled employees – at least they have jobs. They will feel especially annoyed that the on-screen personas of Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis fruitlessly throw around thousands of pounds worth of kit to eradicate their bosses, while they themselves are wedged in cramped cinemas, clutching their discount tickets and a bag of Sainsbury’s own-brand onion rings, ahh the high life.

This film is yet another example of the Seth Rogen legacy – awkward, self-conscious comedy interspersed with high-octane car chases and lots and lots of drugs. Although hilarious in places, it may struggle to hold your attention for the whole 98 minutes. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wondering what you’ll be having for tea when you get home and if you locked the front door… only to be snapped out of it by images of a very foxy looking Ms Aniston.

Horrible Bosses okay, but it’s definitely nothing to write home, or even anonymously to your boss, about. One thing’s for sure, if you do have a job, you’ll be a lot more appreciative of your boss come Monday morning.

If you’ve ever had a bad day at work, perhaps this film is for you. Oh, and of course, there’s some good old Kevin Spacey, doing what he does best – being calm, and mean.

Horrible Bosses is a film starring, amongst others, Kevin Spacey as a horrible boss who treats his employee like crap. His employee then attempts to kill him.

I suppose the difference is here that there’s three bosses, three annoyed employees, and three murder attempts, one being Spacey, another being Colin Farrell, and the third being Jennifer Aniston. It’s an extremely star studded cast, and add to that Jamie Foxx, Jason Bateman, Donald Sutherland, Jason Sudeikis… it’s going to be one to remember, for those who enjoy comedy like this. Trailer’s below, so enjoy!

Kevin Spacey and David Fincher’s last success, whether you noticed the former in the opening credits or not, was The Social Network. Now the star of The Usual Suspects and one of the biggest directors in Tinsletown are preparing to tackle the medium of television.

This time around Spacey will be taking an acting role, which will hopefully reassert some of the credibility he lost for turning up in American Airlines commercials (c’mon, Kevin, you’re one of the elite). And the project sounds right up the alley of the Man Who Plays Quiet Crazy People.

House of Cards, the TV project in question, is helmed by Fincher and is based on the book of the same name. Set at the end of Margaret Thatcher’s time at Number Ten, it follows a British politician who’s after the most desirable political address in the country.

This won’t be the first time House of Cards has appeared on televisions – the BBC adapted it into a TV miniseries in the early Nineties, and it won both a BAFTA and an Emmy. Pretty tough act to follow then, but hopefully Spacey and Fincher will lend their unique talents to the project. More on this as it happens.

The award-winning team behind The Social Network are set to reunite for Sex On The Moon.

Scott Rudin, Michael DeLuca and Dana Brunetti – the team behind everyone’s favourite Facebook film – have signed on to produce a film adaptation of Ben Mezrich‘s upcoming book, Sex On The Moon: The Amazing Story Behind The Most Audacious Heist In History. Kevin Spacey is also set to return as the film’s executive producer.

The book isn’t due to be published until the summer, but Sony Pictures have already picked up the rights to turn it into a movie. Despite the fact that the film is yet to be cast, it is already creating a buzz amongst film fans – largely due to the fact that Mezrich’s last book, The Accidental Billionaires, was the basis for The Social Network, which picked up awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score at this year’s Golden Globes.

Sex On The Moon is a rather different kettle fish, albeit another tale based on a true story. The book focuses on 25-year-old NASA employee Thad Roberts, who constructed a master plan to steal moon rocks kept in a NASA vault, all in an attempt to impress his girl friend. It’s sort of sweet. Sort of.

Sex On The Moon will be third book from Mezrich to be turned into a film, since the 2008 blackjack-based drama, 21, was based on his book, Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions.

Will Jesse Eisenberg also make a return to star in the film? Or perhaps even Justin Timberlake? We can’t wait to find out!

You can read the full story called Sheer Lunacy at LA Times.

Actors Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood had the job of announcing who was up for what.

The King’s Speech, which has already won awards at BIFA, left as a clear front runner, along with The Social Network and Black Swan.

Rather surprisingly, considering the poor reviews, Angelina Jolie has been nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category for her role in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Tourist. On hearing the news Jolie laughed, as did we, but not because it seems a bit mad. She said:

“When we found out we were laughing because it’s the first time that I’ve been in the comedic category so it’s new for me.”

The awards are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is made up of about 85 critics and reporters from all over the world. The event takes place on on January 16 and British comedian/actor Ricky Gervais will host the event once again.

If you’re a fan of classic literature, or an English graduate, like the most of the TFR staff, it could be for you. For everyone else? There’s likely to be immense CGI battles between angels, scenes of pandæmonium and other visionary landscapes… in 3D! It comes as wonderful news, and after the videogame adaptation of Dante’s Inferno in 2009, people seem to be more and more keen on getting epic poetry into a format that the average film enthusiast can enjoy without spending hours working their way through stanza after stanza.

Alex Proyas, the Australian director who released Knowing last year and is also the man behind I, Robot and cult classic The Crow. He’s great at portraying the epic and a dab hand at working with what you can’t see (hate to break it to anyone who’s unaware, but those robots fighting Will Smith weren’t the next iPod…), and it’ll be a project that will be interesting to watch.

For now, it’ll be pre-production and casting. If Kevin Spacey isn’t Lucifer, however, we might be a bit disappointed. But it’s easy to agree with the casting for the recent Bruce Almighty – Morgan Freeman is the only really solid choice for God, although Ian McKellen could probably give it a good go.

Hailed as being the best sci-fi film since ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Moon’ is the lonely story of Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who is coming to the end of his three year contract on the dark side of the moon. Working for Lunar Industries mining Earth’s primary energy source alone with no-one but robot Gerty (voiced by Kevin Spacey) for company, the film follows Sam’s last two weeks of isolation.Unlike many films of this genre, Moon isn’t about aliens or distant worlds – the main focus is on Sam’s mental state and his ever-loosening grasp of reality. After an accident on the moon’s surface, his hallucinations and visions become more and more frequent and his paranoia gives the film a dramatic edge not often achieved in sci-fi films.

What follows doesn’t just raise questions within the audience of what is going on in Sam’s mind, but also gives the character opportunity to ask some deep-searching questions of his own, in a similar existential vein to ‘I heart Huckabees’.

‘Moon’ is an accomplished film that manages to retain audience interest throughout. While there are not necessarily a huge number of jaw-dropping plot twists, the film maintains a level of suspense that is almost Hitchcockian, with unexpected and yet brilliant revelations.

‘Moon’ is the directorial debut of Duncan Jones, son of rock pioneer David Bowie. Showing some signs of being influenced by Kubrick’s ‘2001: Space Odyssey’, this really is the dark horse of 2009, despite its limited cinematic release. The portrayal of Sam is a challenge for Rockwell and one he rises to with aplomb, balancing a fine line between creating audience empathy and yet allowing us to retain a safe distance from this unhinged and isolated character.

An emotional rollercoaster from start to finish, Moon is just simply splendid.

Despite a cryptic title, and an even stranger trailer that reveals nothing about the content of the film, Grant Heslov’s second film ‘The Men Who Stare At Goats’ is an unexpected comedy gem.

Based on the non-fiction book of the same name by UK journalist Jon Ronson, the start of the film introduces investigative reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor). It is 2003 and his seemingly perfect life has just fallen apart; his local reporting job has become mundane and his girlfriend has just left him for his one-armed boss.

In an attempt to impress his ex, Bob decides to fly to Iraq to become a war journalist. However, he has no way into the country, until he meets Lyn Cassidy (George Clooney) who claims to be a former member of the New Earth Army, an obscure branch of the US Army headed by Bill Django (Jeff Bridges).

In a series of flashbacks throughout the film, Bob learns that the New Earth Army were trained to become psychic soldiers as a means of alternative combat after the Vietnam war. The members of the regiment were trained to bend spoons, pass through walls and kill goats by staring at them. They are the antithesis of your stereotypical soldier; they wear US Army uniforms, yet they have long hair, beards and practice yoga, not push-ups. They call themselves Jedi Warriors, which is made all the more amusing by the presence of McGregor, who famously played Obi Wan Kenobi in the latest Star Wars films.

Although the film concerns itself with war, it is surprisingly funny, even to the extent where scenes of kidnappings and the explosion of a roadside bomb become moments of humour.

Perhaps due to the presence of The Big Lebowski’s Bridges, but also due to the film’s amazing landscapes that show the expanse of nothingness in Iraq, the film has a Coen brothers feel about it. Yet the humour isn’t quite so sophisticated, and the ending not quite so satisfying.

The comedy in this film is not for everybody. There are some laugh-out-loud moments that some will not find funny at all. The riotous ending is also rather unbelievable, and underpins the more subtle humour of the first half of the film. Yet when the film’s subject matter as a commentary on Iraq is taken into consideration, it does demonstrate its position that the war was a joke – particularly in the scene where Bob drunkenly watches George Bush give a disjointed speech on TV.

The film offers no resolution to the war and is a refreshing change to some of the more serious cinematic offerings of late. Although it may lack the dark political aspects of ‘Three Kings’ and ‘Dr. Strangelove’, it is still well worth a watch, even if it is just to see Clooney resemble a hairy Dave Grohl in the 80s flashbacks, or just to reminisce as you watch Bridges reprise his role as the Dude one more time.
