The Venice Film Festival will be awash with stars, the opening night including George Clooney and his co-stars of The Ides of March, Ryan Gosling and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

And this is just the start, with a total of 22 films entered into the competition, and a whole bundle of other famous faces set to join in the festivities later in the week. Not wanting to name drop, but just some of the stars that will be milling around include Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Matthew McConaughey, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Madonna. This looks like it will be 11 days of film paradise, so stay tuned for more news coming up.

With the effort that Hugh Jackson has gone to on the red carpet (jumping out of choppers, abseiling off buildings), you’d be hoping that X-Men Origins: Wolverine would do well at the box office. It looks like the film could do even better than expected though – it’s already predicted to become the year’s highest grosser this weekend.
Uncharacteristically for the movie industry, Twentieth Century Fox is staying humble, telling the Hollywood Reporter that they would consider a $70-million taking to be “acceptable”. However, in reality, a sum of $120-130 million is being speculated as the tally of the midnight screenings from 1,500 theatres on Friday morning comes in. X-Men: The Last Stand took in $122.9 million in its first weekend three years ago – so it’s still going to be a close call a to whether the prequel can maintain the franchise’s intrepid success.
The real question is whether Wolverine can beat Matthew McConaughey’s Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – we know who has the strength, but who has the box office stamina?

You might have heard this one before… Matthew McConaughey is a love ‘em and leave ‘em kinda bachelor enjoying his freedom, flexing his muscles and having a general good time regardless of who else gets hurts. That is, of course, until he meets that one special lady… No, It isn’t Failure to Launch Part 2 or How to Lose a Guy in 10 Dates The Sequel – it’s actually a brand new McConaughey vehicle, The Ghost of Girlfriends Past.
When lothario Connor Mead (played by McConaughey, naturally) breaks up with several women via just one conference call, you know that something is going to come back to haunt him – but you expect the thing to be a bit of karma rather than an actual ghost. There a three ghosts to be precise; past, present and future. You see, the movie is a bit of a twist on A Christmas Carol and so Connor is taken on a life odyssey through his failed relationships. It might be too late to change his past, but there’s always hope for the future, which means he might just be able to win around true love Jennifer Garner – although possibly not the viewer if sentimentally isn’t your game.
