The monkeys of Borneo in Indonesia better get their popcorn and banana snacks ready because they are in for a special jungle screening of the new documentary, Born To Be Wild.

A lucky group of orangutans will have the chance to watch the heart-warming documentary which tells the story of one devoted woman who rescues, rehabilitates and returns primates to the wild.

The Warner Brothers picture will be screened in Borneo rainforest where most of the filming took place, as a thank you gesture to some of the monkeys who co-starred in the film.

The President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, admitted that the documentary tugged at his heart strings. According to The Telegraph, he hopes it will inspire Indonesians to work harder to save the red apes from extinction due to the country’s rapidly decreasing rainforests.

Producer Drew Fellman (Made in Hollywood) is said to be eager to see if the primates will pay attention.

He said: “They worked pretty hard on it. They came to be like members of the crew.”

Narrated by award winning actor Morgan Freeman, the 40 minute film transports the audience to the lush, green rainforest where it documents Biruté Mary Galdikas and Daphne Sheldrick – two extraordinary women who rescue and raise many orangutans and elephants, before returning them to the wild.

Canadian primatologist Galdikas has devoted her whole life to looking after vulnerable primates. She set up her own orangutan orphanage centre just outside Tanjung Puting National Park in the early Seventies and has done much to publicise their plight.

Many mother orangutans have been killed after straying into agricultural plantations in search of food for their babies. Others have been hunted by villagers, occasionally for their meat, but primarily as pests.

Ms Galdikas is glad that the movie has finally reached its homeland.

The 65-year-old was reported saying: ‘It helps raise awareness. The average person in Indonesia still doesn’t yet understand the orangutan is a close relative and that they are a protected species and on the verge of extinction’.

The documentary shows how these endangered creatures are at risk of dying out due to the rapidly depleting rainforests. A staggering 90 per cent of all orangutans live in Indonesia, and over the 50 years, a shocking 50 per cent of their native rainforests have been lost due to the world’s demand for wood pulp, paper, timber and palm oil.

Another element of the documentary follows Daphne Sheldrick - a woman who has spent her whole life caring for orphaned Kenyan elephants, whose mothers have been hunted for their valuable ivory tusks. Her hard work and devotion earned her an MBE from the Queen in 1989.

The documentary reached the UK in April 2011 where it has been screened in 3D across various IMAX cinemas. It is still screening today amongst other 3D nature shows.

It has been highly praised, receiving a 96 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as being described by the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw as a ’charming’ and ‘pleasant featurette’ .

Warner Bros is reported to be ‘scared to death’ after audiences claimed they couldn’t understand the dialogue from the latest Batman villain, Bane, in The Dark Knight Rises.

A six minute prologue was shown as a preview of the latest instalment in Christopher Nolan‘s series of Batman films before IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Whilst audiences appear to have been generally impressed by the sneak peak, there’s no ignoring the fact that many of them are also citing the dialogue from Bane, played by Tom Hardy, as being ‘incomprehensible’.

The source of the problem seems to lie in the fact that Hardy’s face is covered by a mask – through which he receives a super-strength serum, much as you might expect. However, it seems that aside from providing Bane with the means to be a credibly menacing bad guy, it has also muffled his voice to the degree that audiences are struggling to understand anything the character says. Coupled with Hardy‘s British accent, American viewers are thought to be finding Bane’s dialogue particularly tricky to understand.

The reaction to the clip has been so overwhelmingly focused on Bane’s dialogue issues that Warner Bros is reported to be putting pressure Nolan to make changes to the film’s audio, before it is released in cinemas. However, Nolan’s not known dumbing down to aid audience understanding (see Inception), and there’s no confirmation that the sound will be re-dubbed.

Batman fans may find it easier to fathom the dialogue of the rest of The Dark Knight Rises‘ star-studded cast, which sees Christian Bale return as Batman himself, as well as Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. They’ll be joined by Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a bunch of crystal clear enunciators if ever there was one.

The Dark Knight Rises is set to hit UK cinemas on 20th July 2012.

Batfans will be excited to hear that Christopher Nolan has finally revealed some juicy news about the next Batman film. The Dark Knight Rises will be set eight years after The Dark Knight, which ended at a rather crucial time for our hero. In an effort to give the people of Gotham hope and keep the image of the White Knight alive, Batman shouldered the blame for Harvey Dent’s murders and went on the run.

It has also been announced that a prologue for The Dark Knight Rises will be shown before Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in IMAX. Christopher Nolan has confirmed that this will basically show the first six or seven minutes of the film, including an introduction to the villain, Bane. Also, a full-length trailer will be shown before the new Sherlock Holmes film, Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows.

When the final film in the trilogy comes out on July 20th 2012, we will rejoin an older Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), who is no longer at the top of his game. It is likely that this will leave numerous questions for viewers, such as what has Bruce Wayne been doing since we last saw him? What state will Gotham City be in and who will be the new villains that Batman will have to face?

Well, at least we can answer the latter of these questions as Tom Hardy will play Bane, who you may recognise as the huge, muscly brute that we saw in the 1997 film Batman and Robin. Hardy has said that Bane will test Batman’s physical as well as mental strength and that this will be a new kind of challenge for him.

The Dark Knight Rises will see Michael Caine return as Alfred, Liam Neeson as Ra’s Al Ghul and Cillian Murphy as the creepy scarecrow man, Dr Jonathan Crane. Gary Oldman also keeps his old character of Jim Gordon and Morgan Freeman is Lucius Fox again. New additions to the cast include Anne Hathaway who will be slipping into the skin-tight costume of Catwoman and will no-doubt do something bad-ass, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Gotham cop, John Blake and Marion Cotillard will play Wayne Enterprises board member Miranda Tate.

This film is supposed to be the closing of the Batman story and with it being set eight years on, this may well work. It will be interesting to see how it all ends, as the writers are keeping the details close to their chests. Will Batman be able to defeat the villains once again? Will he even be able to fight well after eight years? And how will the new characters of Catwoman and Bane fare? We will have to wait until next year to find out the answers to some of these questions, but we will keep you posted if we hear anything. Until then, take a look at the teaser trailer to whet your appetite:

A number of famous faces turned out last night to celebrate the award, which was being presented to the Oscar-winning actor at an event in Los Angeles. It was first announced last October that Freeman would be given the award, and last night’s celebration included clips from some of Freeman’s most famed films, including Glory, Driving Miss Daisy and Million Dollar Baby.

The AFI Life Achievement Award was first established in 1973, and is awarded to a single individual in recognition of his or her lifetime contribution to enriching American culture through motion pictures and television, and it is widely considered one of the highest film honours for those involved in film-making.

Several of his co-stars offered a few words about the actor, with Forest Whitaker calling him “an adviser, a beacon, a confidant, a shoulder to lean on, protector and friend”.

In the past, Freeman has been nominated for an Academy Award for his performances in Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption and Invictus and won the award for Best Supporting Actor in 2005 for his role in Million Dollar Baby.

Freeman himself said that the award was “easy to take but hard to believe”. His is the 39th person to be awarded the AFI accolade, with past recipients including Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood and Elizabeth Taylor.

Yeah, the Akira remake is still going ahead. Put down the torches and pitchforks for a second. Now, you may want to sit down, but if you’re worried about this remake, the latest news might not assuage those fears.

Sitting comfortably? Okay, then I’ll begin. Steve Kloves, the man behind every of the Harry Potter film bar one – hey, come on! Come back! Right, look. He’s a talented screenwriter, and you’d rather have the biggest anime film of all time in his hands, surely?

Admittedly, yes, it’s going to be a seriously weird film. Not only have rumours indicated the hero, Kaneda, will be played by Zac Efron (which should spark off a fresh wave of racial debate after The Last Airbender‘s white-out of the assumed Asian cast), but Morgan Freeman could be playing the main police officer hunting him down, the Colonel.

As someone who’s watched the anime, I say stuff it – go for it and see what happens. This film’s being slammed by critics so hard before its release that it’s got no chance in hell of impressing anyone outside FHM and The Daily Mirror upon release, even if it is a masterpiece. So, if it’s good, it’s good.

It’s not the anime, of course it isn’t. But logically, what about people with a huge passion for Dragon Ball? That in itself is an adaptation of the Chinese classical novel Journey to the West. Sure, it might turn out like Speed Racer (hopefully without the animal cruelty charges), but what if it turns out to be something that truly depicts the dark majesty of Akira, which, in itself, is an adaptation of the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo. So there. Chill out, and more on this as it comes.

It looked great and the reception couldn’t have been better, but what does a successful stand-alone film mean to Hollywood, these days? Sequels, preferably at least two. So Summit have hired Jon and Elrich Hoeber to script the sequel, the writing team who transferred the original graphic novel to the screen for the first iteration.

Hopefully we’ll see even more gun-blazing action, and if they can pull in a few more big names to play villains or even more retired and extremely dangerous black ops agents, then the more the merrier! I’m thinking John Goodman. What are you thinking?

Soul Men is a comedy tinged with sadness which, in a way, makes you feel obliged to enjoy it. Sadly, this doesn’t guarantee that you actually will.

I don’t mean the film itself is sad, of course. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, Soul Men, is an unsubtle comedy right from the start. Its script is so desperate for laughs that it’s prepared to shamelessly rehash all sort of comedy clichés, so there’s no chance of you missing the point.

The tragedy comes from the fact that this was Bernie Mac‘s penultimate appearance on film, before sadly dying of pneumonia before the movie’s release. An original and talented comedian, Mac’s career spanned nearly two decades: he was certainly funny. Fans of his work will be keen to see this film, released just three months after his death, and determined, I imagine, to like it.

Now, I’m no Bernie Mac expert, but I’m willing to bet that Soul Men isn’t his most impressive achievement. His performance is easy to watch, and he does his best with a script written by Matthew Stone and Rob Ramsey, which balances precariously upon stereotype-based humour. He also appears well suited to his role of a retired soul singer who, after years out of the spotlight, is keen to reunite with his singing partner in a tribute concert for their former lead singer, who has recently passed away.

Said partner is played by none other Samuel L. Jackson – who provides yet further rationale for thinking that this film might have been, well, better. But in this case, the critically acclaimed actor seems more than happy to slip into an familiar buddy-movie pairing, playing the reluctant half of the singing duo, whose fear of flying necessitates the film’s road trip.

In fact, the road trip aspect proves to be one of this films more endearing qualities. It might be a tried and tested formula, but that doesn’t mean it’s broke and Soul Men is all the better for using it.

The pair travel from L.A. to New York, giving us the opportunity to indulge in nostalgic flashbacks to their days as a successful soul group – not unpleasant, as trips down memory lane go. There’s also the potential for a few heartfelt moments as Mac’s character is reunited with his daughter, played by Dreamgirls‘ Sharon Leal. Or is is Jackson’s daughter? It all gets very confusing, but don’t panic, you can basically get the gist of it from watching the trailer.

In any case, the revival of all these relationships, for which we should supposedly be rooting, is somewhat tarnished by the misjudged sex scenes which repeatedly seem to confuse ‘crude’ for ‘comic’. Oh and the daughter, whoever her father might be, is overshadowed by her obnoxious boyfriend who takes up far too much of everyone’s time.

This film is saved, or at least thrown a lifeline, by it’s musical endeavours. The soundtrack is thoroughly enjoyable, as are the on-screen musical performances from Mac and Jackson. Original Soul Man, Isaac Hayes also makes a few stirring appearances in what was to also be his last movie role, as he passed away the day after Mac. Soul Men was reported to have been heavily re-edited in an attempt to soften its tone, as tribute to the two actors. Who knows what we might have seen in the original.

Hardcore fans of the Japanese animated film Akira may not want to continue reading. Well, you can, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

There is a rumour flying about that High School Musical hunk, Zac Efron, is due to star in a live-action remake of Akira, as the lead Kaneda.

Talk of the film being remade, which is considered by many to be the greatest Manga film ever made, has been going on for a couple of years now. In 2008 Leonardo DiCaprio‘s production company, Appian Way were attached to it, with rumours that they would turn Katsuhiro Otomo‘s six volume comic into two features.

Now it is thought that the Hughes Brothers, who were behind The Book of Eli, will be bringing it to life. And it is believed that Children of Men writers, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, are developing a script.

We had heard rumours that the plot would be taken from Neo Tokyo to New Manhattan, so we were expecting an American cast. It’s looking likely that Morgan Freeman will play the part of the Colonel, but Zac Efron? We’re not sure how super fans are going to react to this? It’s a change enough that it’s being Americanised, but having the HSM star in the lead could be the death of the film before the film makers have even started work on it. What do you think?

Wearing a stunning black dress with a dash of red, she showed why, even at 65, age really is no object.

She was joined by her co-star and legendary action star Bruce Willis. However the other stars of the film, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, were not present, perhaps it was the rain that put them off?

RED is loosely based on a three-part comic book series of the same name created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. RED stands for Retired Extremely Dangerous and tells the story of four CIA agents who are brought back together for one final job. They are Frank Moses (Willis), Joe (Freeman), Marvin (Malkovich) and Victoria (Mirren).

The film, directed by Robert Schwentke, stars Mary-Louise Parker as Willis’ partner. Both Parker and Willis’ real life partner, Emma Heming, attended the premiere last night.

Mirren recently expressed her delight at being a part of the film, saying:

”Oh my God, it was great fun this film. I had fun anyway. I absolutely loved every minute of it. Yes, you always learn from great movie stars, I have to say. There’s no accident why they’re great movie stars and Bruce is a great movie star.”

She also went on to make a point about older actresses in Hollywood, of which she is one of the leading women. She said:

“I think people’s perception is changing. Really, as an actor you’re reflecting the perception of the world around you, and the perception of the world around you is changing. The perception is changing of women, the perception is changing of older people.

“I don’t think actually the reality has changed at all. I think 60-year-old men and women 20 years ago could do exactly what 60-year-old men and women can do nowadays. Just the perception has changed.”

RED will be released in UK cinemas on October 22nd.
