Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial film about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden is set to start filming next month.

British actors including Tom Hardy and Idris Elba are rumoured to make an appearance in the film, alongside Australian actors, Neighbours favourite Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton of The Thing who has officially scooped the lead role.

Oscar-winning director, Kathryn Bigelow, (The Hurt Locker) had already started writing the screenplay with Mark Boal long before Bin Laden was found and killed at his compound in Northern Pakistan by the US Navy SEALs last May.

The script was almost complete by 2010, but when Barack Obama announced Bin Laden’s death, Bigelow and Boal were forced to re-write the script.

Edgerton told the Sydney Morning Herald: “I had signed on to do the project when the initial script was almost done. I knew what it was about and then Bin Laden was killed and the whole thing was … like a house of cards, it had to be kind of knocked over and rebuilt.”

The film – which will focus on the US Navy SEALs – is also rumoured to feature Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as a reporter, Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Edgar Ramirez (Vantage Point).

There was much controversy when earlier this year, it was rumoured that the film-makers received ‘top level access to the most classified mission in history’. This was according to New York Times journalist, Maureen Dowd, but The White House and the film-makers soon denied these claims. Dowd it should be noted was one of the key journalists to claim that Saddam Hussain certainly had WMD, so perhaps we should take what she has to say with a pinch of scepticism.

Amy Pascal, from Sony Pictures, told The Guardian that with the death of Osama Bin Laden, this film could not be more relevant.

She said: “Kathryn and Mark have an outstanding perspective on the team that was hunting the most wanted man in the world”.

The untitled film is scheduled to be released this December, just after the US presidential elections.

News that Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden film has signed up its first actor comes within the same week as the culmination of a ten-year manhunt for the orchestrator of the 9/11 attacks. Timed? Probably.

Bin Laden was the boogie man of most people’s adult lives and childhoods, especially at the beginning of the millennium. This week, he was finally found, and shot (though we won’t go into the circumstances, most notably because the U.S. government has yet to settle on a final version of events) by a US Navy SEAL.

Although the film idea was ready to go before this week’s events, it begs the question of whether or not the ending will change, and to what degree, given the murky nature of that bloody encounter. It’ll certainly appeal to the swathes of Americans who were celebrating on Monday, and feels like Bigelow is simply tapping into modern warfare as a source material (odd, as Call of Duty games are slammed by the media for doing just the same thing, despite their interactivity), which seems to have revived as a hot topic in today’s film market.

Joel Edgerton (the young Owen Lars, step-brother of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars) is the first actor to sign a contract, and he’ll be playing one of the Navy SEALs involved in the hunt for the infamous terrorist. According to sources, they’re looking for a safe location to shoot. Given we’ve not yet witnessed the full reaction of those who believe the terrorist to have been made a martyr, it’s probably for the best. More on this as it comes.

Take a Bollywood comedy and add the world’s most wanted terrorist and what do you get? The unique movie experience that is Tere Bin Laden.

Released today, Tere Bin Laden tells the tale of Ali Hassan, an ambitious young reporter who is desperate to emigrate to the USA to live the American dream. But time after time his visa application is turned down.

Finally, when Ali meets an Osama Bin Laden look-a-like he comes up with a ruse to make fake videos of the elusive terrorist. This will give him a fabulous scoop and then that precious job in the US.

The scheme doesn’t go according to plan and soon he’s up to his neck in trouble with the secret services on his tail and President personally involved.

Made in Mumbai (or Bombay) and set in Pakistan, the film stars the Pakistani model and singer Ali Zafar in his first foray into the movies.

The Tere Bin Laden is definitely played for laughs, and contains some satirical swipes at the expense of the heavy handed US foreign policy makers, intelligence agencies and immigration authorities, as well as Bin Laden and his own ludicrous set up.

The title uses a Hindi pun on the word ‘bin’, which means ‘son of’ in Arabic and ‘without’ in Hindi. So, Tere Bin Laden means roughly ‘Without You, Laden’ in Hindi.

Bollywood is no stranger to these topics and has already made Taliban: The Musical.

One wonders what will be made of it in Afghanistan, where Bollywood movies are very popular but were banned by the Taliban.

Here’s a clip of the big song which looks a hoot:
