Asger Leth’s upcoming film does exactly what it says on the tin – it centres around a man, played by Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of the Titans), who is standing on a ledge. However, it’s actually a lot more exciting than it sounds as this is not just an ordinary suicide attempt.

Worthington’s character is threatening to jump off the rooftop of a hotel in New York and the question is, why is he doing this? The person with the job of finding out is hostage negotiator Lydia Mercer who is played by Elizabeth Banks, known for appearing in The Next Three Days and The 40 Year Old Virgin. She quickly finds out that the man on the ledge turns out to be escaped convict Nick Cassidy, a cop that was convicted for stealing a diamond.

He insists he is innocent. Meanwhile his brother, played by Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Jane Eyre), is doing something over the road that is definitely sketchy. A crowd begins to gather and it soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems.

Ed Harris (The Beautiful Mind, A History of Violence) plays the cop who Cassidy supposedly stole the diamond from. He should provide a good bit of bad-ass cop acting in a film that looks pretty interesting from the trailer. The film also features Anthony Mackie (Million Dollar Baby, The Hurt Locker), Mandy Gonzalez (Across the Universe, After) and J. Smith-Cameron (You Can Count on Me, The Rage: Carrie 2). Man On A Ledge will open in UK cinemas on 3rd February but if you can’t wait until then, a new clip has been released which you can check out below:

You probably haven’t heard of Massy Tadjedin, but this may be set to change. Last Night, her directorial debut not only has a couple of gorgeous stars, but is also very clever. One of these stars is Keira Knightley and this might be her most intriguing role yet.

Tadjedin is an Iranian American who has previously written screenplays for two small films, Leo and The Jacket. This film concerns the confused relationships of four young people in New York City, and while it wades into deep emotional territory, it still retains a detached and intelligent eye. We’re kept guessing about the character’s feelings and the direction of the action until the very last frame.

The heavy emotional current of the film starts from the opening scenes of Keira looking back unhappily on the party she has just left, and doesn’t let up until the end. There are two nights in Last Night, the party on the first being a prelude to the main action on the second. Joanna Reed (Keira Knightley) is a writer married to a young professional, Michael Reed (played by Sam Worthington of Avatar fame). Joanna is jealous of her husband’s glances at his co-worker Laura (a luscious Eva Mendes, who is curvy as Keira is stick thin), but is he really been looking at her, and if he was, what does this mean? Does he just fancy her or is something more going on between them?
After the party, Joanna and Michael arrive home to the exposed brickwork, chunky art books and brushed steel kitchen units of their loft flat. Everyone and everything in Last Night is well chosen and stylish. Having recently been watching a Curb Your Enthusiasm box set where Larry David and his gang mooch around in ill-fitting t-shirts and baggy trousers, it’s a comfort to see Americans (or Europeans living in the US) who don’t think clothes should look like potato sacks. Anyway, there at the flat they continue to argue about Michael’s either lustful or innocent glances. The trouble is made worse by the potentially naughty husband’s out-of-town business trip with Laura the next day. Oh boy, Joanna sure ain’t happy about that.
Michael goes on his trip, and while he’s away Joanna meets an old flame Alex (played by the very handsome Guillaume Canet, last seen by most of us in Danny Boyle’s The Beach), an handsome Frenchman who’s on a short visit to New York. So, two parallel stories develop: Joanna and Alex rekindle, or test out, their old feelings for each other, while Michael and Laura see if those there’s anything to those furtive glances. The drama hangs by a thread of tension as each character juggles with the morality of temptation and guilt, as they sweat over the emotional territory of lust, deep connection and fidelity. This dramatic action is hurried along by a shimmering, looping Michael Nymanesque music.

Knightley might not be the most believable writer – what exactly does swirl around in that perfectly shaped head of hers? – but this somehow doesn’t matter too much. This may be because Sam Worthington’s rather boring, self-satisfied yuppy husband. Neither of them stand out as geniuses, but this makes them a more likely couple. The surrounding acting helps make up for any short-comings, especially a quick turn by Griffin Dunne (once known as Jack Goodman, the American who was killed by the werewolf before he even got to London) who plays a wise, New York man of the world.
As the sun comes up, the night and the film draw to a close. Lessons have been learned, although what exactly they are is a matter of some debate, both by the characters and for the audience. We’ve also seen Keira Knightley surprise us with a solid performance in a nuanced role. Last Night gets us thinking, looks lovely and has a great ending.

After playing Na’vi creature Neytiri in James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar, and finding herself caught up in last month’s crime drama Takers, Saldana has landed the lead role in upcoming film Columbiana.

It looks like Saldana’s going to be looking more than a little Lara Croft-esque for her role as Cataleya Restrepo, a woman who witnessed her parents’ murder in Colombia’s capital of Bogotá when she a child.

As an adult, she works for her gangster uncle as an assassin, but spends her free time trying to track down the mobster behind her parents’ death in order to take her revenge.

She’ll be joined by French-American actor Michael Vartan, who is best known for his television appearances US action drama, Alias. In fact, the French influences don’t stop there, with Luc Besson producing and co-writing with his frequent collaborator, Robert Mark Kamen.

Filming for this production began back in August, with shooting taking place in locations which include Chicago, New Orleans, Mexico, and Paris. We’ll keep you posted!

The trailer was released today for Last Night, which sees Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington being more than a little tempted – and not by each other…

Knightley and Worthington play a married couple whose relationship is put to the test when he spends the weekend with an attractive work colleague, and she finds herself being pursued by an old flame.

Still, you can hardly blame them: Worthington’s colleague happens to be none other than the stunning Eva Mendes, and Knightley’s ex is played by the charming French actor and director, Guillaume Canet.

This indie film is the directorial debut from Massy Tadjedin, who also wrote the script. Her other projects currently include Le Voyeur, which has recently been picked up by Columbia Pictures and is likely to be produced by Will Smith – so it looks like she’s certainly one to watch!

Last time we saw Bell he was pirouetting around picking up BAFTAs for his role in Billy Elliot. Although he’s made several appearances since his ballet days, a Green Day music video and Scottish drama Hallam Foe to name a few, his addition to the cast of Man On A Ledge could see him receiving big screen recognition once again.

The film will see Bell ditching the leotards (and presumably acquiring a leather jacket or a brooding stare or something?) to plot large scale thefts, whilst his brother, played by Sam Worthington, serves time for a crime he didn’t commit. When Worthington’s character is released from jail to attend their father’s funeral, he threatens to commit suicide, whilst Bell attempts to carry out a heist of a jewellery store across the street.

Also said to star in Man on a Ledge is The Hurt Locker‘s Anthony Mackie, with Amy Adams rumoured to be interested in the role of the psychiatrist who attempts to talk Worthington out of his suicide attempt.

The original script was written by Pablo Fenjves, who is best know for ghostwriting O.J. Simpson’s account of his murder case. Further amendments to the script have also been made by Erich and Jon Hoeber, the brothers behind the screenplay of the upcoming Bruce Willis film, Red.

Man On A Ledge will also be the Hollywood début of director Asger Leth, who previously directed the documentary film, Ghosts Of Cité Soleil.

If you can’t wait until the film’s 2012 release date, you can catch Bell starring alongside Simon Pegg in The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which is due to be released next year.

He might have said he’d be back, but Arnie is nowhere to be found in the fourth instalment of the Terminator franchise – and neither are any of the other cast. Unless you’ve been making like John Connor and hiding in a bunker for the last few years, you’ll undoubtedly be aware that Christian Bale is the guy whose destiny it is to save humanity from the clutches of Skynet. And, frankly, who better to have on your side? If he didn’t prove his kick-ass ability as Bruce Wayne in the Dark Knight, he certainly did with the now infamous on-set flip-out at the Director of Photography. Obviously the cinematography is going to be up to scratch now, but what about the film as a whole…

It might have caused a bit of controversy when Charlie’s Angels’ McG was announced as the director, but after the universally panned Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines, a fresh take was seen to be needed – particularly since the plot has reached a place where the film can act as both a sequel and prequel. Another significant point is the fact that Connor is now battling cyborgs in real-time – 2018, which is 14 years since Skynet became self-aware and turned on mankind. Amongst the post-apocalyptic carnage that followed, we have Connor, his wife (now played by Bryce Dallas Howard) and a slowly building human resistance army helped along by a decommissioned Terminator (Sam Worthington).

A fifth instalment is already in the works, which might say something about the outcome, but we won’t know whether we’ll be saying hasta la vista to McG and Bale until the box office takings have been counted.
