Bridget Jones, Marty McFly and Maximus Meridius are just some of the iconic characters which make up Universal Studios’ rich cinema history. And to celebrate 100 years of filmmaking, we take a look back at the nation’s most cherished Universal movie-moments of the past century.

As part of the studio’s milestone birthday, a poll was taken asking 1,000 Brits what were their most memorable moments from Universal films. Flying into first place was Spielberg’s 1982 E.T.. Almost a fifth of us thought that the scene where Elliot rides past the moon with E.T on his bike was the best movie-moment of all time. And of course that scene wouldn’t be half as epic if it wasn’t for John Williams’ famous score.

The second most memorable moment was Roy Scheider’s iconic delivery of “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” in the 1975 Jaws film.

The brilliant scene where Marty gets blasted back into the past by Doc Brown in Back to the Future ranked third place in our most loved movie-moments of all time. “Great Scott!” as Doc Brown would say.

Other well-loved Universal moments which were voted into the top 10 include Russell Crowe’s declaration ‘My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius’ in Gladiator, which fought its way into fourth place. This was closely followed by the cheesy musical, Mamma Mia, featuring Meryl Streep. More than sixty Brits love the scene where Meryl Streep sings ‘Dancing Queen’ with her fuddy-duddy mum pals.

Brits were also asked who their most loved Universal characters were and blasting into first place was Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly from Back to the Future. Bullet-dodging, action-man, Jason Bourne, as played by Matt Damon in the Bourne Trilogy films came in second place. Then E.T., the most lovable alien to come to our screens, ranked third place with 6.6%. Known as the ’30-something singleton’, poor old Bridget Jones won’t be pleased to hear that she was beaten by a wrinkled alien, putting her in fourth place. The plump, clumsy character, played by Renée Zellweger, was the only female character in the top ten list.

As part of Universal’s 100th birthday, the studio will also be re-releasing some of their classic films on DVD and Blu-ray. Film fanatics will soon be able to relive some of their favourite moments in film history, from To Kill a Mockingbird, to All Quiet on the Western Front. The films – which are being released on Blu-Ray for the first time – will come in an interactive Augmented Reality packaging. Simply download the Universal 100 app to your phone and hold it over the DVD packaging to see it come to life on your screen.

Once upon a time, in 1927 to be precise, Walt Disney and his cartoonist partner Ub Iwerk’s created a creature called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit with Universal Pictures. After falling out over pay, Disney and Iwerk left to form their own studio and, not having the rights to their Oswald character, redesigned him too look like a mouse. They named him Mickey. Now a long lost short film of Oswald has been located in the Huntley Film Archives in Herefordshire, England.

The film titled, Hungry Hobos, is a five-minute short created by Disney and Iwerks in 1927. Missing for decades, simple curiosity led the Film Archive to stumble across it. “This has been in our collection for decades,” Amanda Huntley, director of the archives said. “But my colleague took the film from the shelf and Googled it.” Quickly realising it was long lost, they immediately alerted film experts.

Hungry Hobos was first screened in 1928 with Mickey Mouse getting a trial run at the same time, unfortunately it went missing shortly afterwards. Nowadays very few of us know of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit who was owned by Universal until 2006 when Walt Disney gained the rights, but people the world over have heard of Mickey, who remains Disney’s most iconic character.

Robert Dewar, commercial director of the archives said, “Oswald is a proto-Mickey … If you see him, you see the same shape of the head, the ears, the mannerisms.”

The silent film is one of 26 episodes created by Mr Disney and Iwerk during their time at Universal. The first of Oswald’s adventures, Trolley Troubles was premiered in 1927. It features the rabbit trying to get his tram and passengers past lots of silly obstacles to the other end of the track over a charming five minutes. The short was a hit and more were commissioned. The newly found Hungry Hobos features Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his friend Peg Leg Pete as they try to steal an egg from a chicken on a train out of hunger.

The short is set to be auctioned at the Bonhams’ Entertainment Memorabilia auction in Los Angeles in December.

We’ve got Toy Story 3 hitting the screens next year, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen coming in a few weeks and G.I. Joe this summer… As if anymore proof was needed that we really are all over-grown kids with an insatiable appetite for play-things, Universal have now announced a live-action movie adaptation based around elasticised doll Stretch Armstrong.Introduced in the 1970s (no, I don’t remember him either), Stretch Armstrong is a man who can elongate his limbs to incredible length – although the plot is the one thing that’s really going to need stretching if the studio thinks this is premise enough for a film… The guy tasked with this is Steve Oedekerk, who has previously penned scripts for Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty, Patch Adams, The Nutty Professor and Kung Pow: Enter The Fist. Meanwhile, Brian Grazer will be producing.

“It’s a story about a guy stretching, if you will, the limits of what is possible to become all that he can be,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. Riiiight…. The release date is pencilled for 15 April 2011, so they have a while longer to, er, bounce around some ideas.

John Travolta showed us all he could sing in Grease and Hairspray, but has he got what it takes to be Sinatra?

Martin Scorsese is set to direct a film about the musical legend and the Saturday Night Fever star is just one of the names being bandied around about the lead (along with the suitably more slimmer and mopped Leonardo DiCaprio). With Universal behind the production, Sinatra’s daughter Tina is set to be the executive producer, so the biopic might be viewed with slightly rose tinted specs, with the crooner’s Mafia connections conveniently omitted from memory. Although, having said that, Scorsese isn’t normally one to shy away from a bit of gang-land drama, so it’s hard to predict – even if Tina does tell him “I want it My Way” (sorry).

In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)-the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone-from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang, thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptised as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals-from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti-were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.
