The eighties were pretty cool, weren’t they? There was Madonna, perms, leggings and of course some amazing movies. The best of these were the teen movies. Even if you weren’t alive then a lot of them have had a lasting legacy. Put a scrunchy in your hair (or quiff it up) and take our 80s teen movie quiz for a spin.

If you’ve got a dog on your lap and he loves to read TFR, you may want to steer him towards the neighbourhood cat, as Rex might get a bit squeamish!

We’re big Tim Burton fans here at TFR and it’s always nice to see what the kooky fellow is getting up to next, so seeing him adapt his creative early works from the 80s using his classic stop-motion techniques is exciting, to say the least.

Frankenweenie’s all about a dog who dies. Sad, right? But fear not! It’s reborn as a Frankenstein’s monster, but with four legs and a wagging tail! Featuring Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice), Martin Landau (Ed Wood), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), it’s bound to be a great adaptation. Given Tim Burton’s ability for getting the most out of the actors he works with (especially as he keeps working with the same people!).

So, dogs, stop-animation, the undead and more stitches then a Friday night at an East London hospital – sounds good to us, though for now, let’s keep it between us and anyone not working for the RSPCA, shall we? They might get the wrong idea…

Vince Vaughn and Kevin James have joined up with the all-star cast, including Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah. If that’s not enough to lure the viewers in, it’s also directed by Oscar-winner Ron Howard who is known for A Beautiful Mind and How the Grinch Stole Christmas amongst others.

The Dilemma is the story of Ronny (Vaughn) and Nick (James) who have been best buds since high school and now own an auto-design firm together. Things turn sour when Ronny sees Nick’s wife Geneva (Ryder) with another man (Tatum). Torn about what to do, Ronny’s life turns into comic mayhem (at least according to Universal Pictures it does).

The trailer opens with Vaughn making a joke about electric cars being ‘gay’, so we’re hoping the whole film isn’t going to fall as flat as that.

Take a look at trailer and see if you’ll have a dilemma (get it?) about whether to see it or not.

The film will be released in the US on 14th January. There is no UK release date as yet.

The film stars Natalie Portman as Nina, an obsessive ballerina in a New York company’s production of Swan Lake. She takes on the part of the White Swan, replacing former prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre, played by Winona Ryder.

But things become altogether more menacing when Mila Kunis shows up as new dancer Lily, who steals the attentions of the company’s director, played by Vincent Cassel. Lily fits the part of the sly and sensual Black Swan, but a bitter rivalry begins between them, which morphs into a somewhat twisted friendship.

Aronofsky’s certainly no stranger to sinister film-making. He made his directorial début in 1998 with the psychological thriller Pi, and his portrait of addiction and delusion in Requiem for a Dream earned the film recognition as being “one of the most beautifully unpleasant movies ever made”.

So far Aronofsky’s  biggest commercial success has been with The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke as a has-been wrestler given one last chance. This trailer suggests his latest film will be just as filled with the foreboding and eerie weirdness for which the director is famed. Portman reportedly likened the tone of Black Swan to Roman Polanski’s macabre thriller, Rosemary’s Baby.

It’s not hard to see that, apart from anything else, this film is set to be visually stunning. Aside from the cast’s dance coaching from the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, Portman’s transformation from the innocent White Swan into something much darker promises to be nothing short of mesmerising.

Portman said of her part in the the film, “I’m trying to find roles that demand more adulthood from me because you can get stuck in a very awful cute cycle as a woman in film, especially being such a small person.”

As for the beautiful Mila Kunis, this film is a far cry from her roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and That 70s Show, with Aronofsky reportedly claiming that she “electrified” him and “made the screen sizzle”. However, whether or not remarkable aesthetics and first-class acting performances might end up being overshadowed by reports of the film’s lesbian overtones remains yet to be seen.

Black Swan will have its world premiere as the opening film at the 67th Venice Film Festival in September 2010, as well as a screening later that month at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film will have a limited public release in select cities on December 1, 2010.

They might not want to talk about the plot, but one thing’s for sure, considering Slater hits 40 this year and Ryder isn’t too far off, they’ll have long graduated from the Westerberg High they once destroyed. Will they do a 90210 and come back as teachers? Somehow that just doesn’t fit…

“I was very nervous and insecure about pulling it off. But then, I could use the insecurity because Sandra is insecure,” she told Elle, before commenting on some of her inspiration; “I worked with Meryl Streep on The House of the Spirits. I always thought actors had to be really depressed or moody or anguished to be great, but she was completely fine and had her family and came to work and did an amazing job and she wasn’t that way.  I remember that being a really big deal to me. And I was like, ‘Wow, I can actually be happy and be good at the same time!’”

She might not have Streep by her side in Pippa Lee, but there is a fine selection of other talent (excluding Keanu Reeves quite possibly), with Robin Wright Penn, Julianne moore, Monica Bellucci and Gossip Girl Blake Lively, who’s proved that she can graduate from teen TV.

Much of the action takes place aboard the ominous interstellar cruiser, where the future captain of the starship Enterprise is still a young cadet. He’s not the only thing fresh and new though… Gone are the boxy stun guns and spray-painted toys. The $150 million budget has instead bought sleeker weaponry and costumes, not to mention the effects, which make the old ‘beam me up’ sequences seem like the work of kindergarten.

After a succession of disappointing TV spin-offs and features, this reboot might not only make fans proud to call themselves ‘Trekkies’ once more, but also bring a whole new audience.
