10 films that make you want to go on holiday.

As the weather heats up in the UK for once, all any of us can think about is going on holiday. Here’s a look at the films that make our feet itch to get away and our bodies ache for sun, sea and a little holiday romance…

1. Summer Holiday

Location: All around Europe, but starts in England on a double-decker London bus.

Temperature: Well, they head towards Greece which is well known for its searing summers. So, take four mechanics, three ladies, an American girl and boy (well, as American as Cliff Richard can get), all of whom will not stop belting out songs such as ‘We’re all going on a summer holiday’, then things can get pretty hot (and possibly annoying).

2. Dirty Dancing

Location: A summer camp in New York’s Catskill Mountains, where privileged people such as Baby and her family go for the summer.

Temperature: Hot, hot, hot. With Patrick Swayze dancing all over the place in the summer heat with the young and impressionable Baby dancing all over him, things get pretty sultry. No one can forget the steamy scene when Baby visits the staff quarters after hours and watches as the camp workers get all sweaty and up, close and personal.

3. The Beach

Location: South East Asia, in particular Thailand and of course the beach, which is a secret paradise with unlimited marijuana.

Temperature: Well, as tropical islands go this one is pretty steamy. There is the classic sex on the beach scene between Françoise (Virginie Ledoyen) and Richard (Leornardo DiCaprio). And then there is the sexual encounter between the island’s leader Sal (Tilda Swinton) and Richard.

4. Shirley Valentine

Location: Starts in oh so glamorous Liverpool, but ends on the beaches of Greece, after the best friend of the main character Shirley (Pauline Collins) wins an all expenses paid trip for two to Mykonos.

Temperature: Between the frying of egg and chips in Liverpool to romance with Greek waiters, this does a lot to raise body temperatures.

5. Roman Holiday

Location: Umm, as the title suggests – Rome

Temperature: This one isn’t so hot, it’s more the sort that warms the cockles of your heart. Everyone loves a story about a Princess (Audrey Hepburn) who falls for a normal man (Gregory Peck). With the beautiful backdrop of Rome, Audrey’s classic elegance and Peck’s ever so handsome face, it’s the perfect film to get you in the mood for a summer European break.

6. Kevin and Perry Go Large

Location: Ibiza! After stopping a bank robbery, the two 15-year-old boys are given a cash reward which they decide to spend on a trip to Ibiza to lose their virginity.

Temperature: Two teenagers, lots of sun and beautiful women leads to some very embarrassing moments that will leave you very red faced! You’ll have to watch it to find out if they lose their ‘V’ plates or not.

7. Mamma Mia

Location: The picturesque Greek Island Kaloraiki, where Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep) owns a villa and her daughter bride-to-be Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is staying for her wedding.

Temperature: Things hot up when Sophie invites three men who could potentially be her father to the wedding. The smouldering Pierce Brosnan, who has a particularly lovely Irish accent in the film, Mr Darcy himself, Colin Firth, and the Swedish Stellan Skarsgard. With some sizzling Abba songs, that always make people feel summery, this movie makes you want you to start packing immediately, either that or go and do some ABBA karaoke.

8. Cocktail

Location: After leaving the United States Army, Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise), goes from being a rubbish bar man in a New York bar to an excellent cocktail shaker in a bar in Jamaica.

Temperature: Bar work is sweaty business, top that with the Jamaican sun, things get pretty hot. Again there is a classic sex on the beach scene – maybe it’s actually these scenes that makes us all want to go away? And there is some lethal flirting from a wealthy older lady called Bonnie. Oh and some people seem to think Tom Cruise is attractive in this film.

And to top off our list, the best from England and America’s slap stick, classics that we all secretly really enjoy…

9. Carry On Abroad

Location: The wittily named Spanish resort of Elsebels on the Costa Packet, where the group are staying in a half-built hotel.

Temperature: With any Carry On film, things get rather cheeky and being the 24th in the series, their saucy humour is on another level. The film ends after they all enjoy far too much of the local tipple, Liquera por l’amoura, which is an aphrodisiac and they all pair off as their hotel crumbles around them.

10. National Lampoon’s European Vacation

Location: The Griswald family are let loose in Europe after winning an all-expenses paid trip on a game show.

Temperature: Slap stick gag after slap stick gag as the family cause a disaster zone in one city after another. There are a lot of topless girls, because that’s what Europeans do apparently, plus the sexual references of course. It’s the sort of film you will either find hysterical or that will make you cringe throughout, but it does show some of the best land marks in Europe.

So, have you packed yet?

I have watched Summer Holiday many times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Its a classic summer movie, full of fun, romance, great scenery and a lot of laughs. There is great music from that era, and its a light, fun movie the whole family can watch without worrying about language or inappropriate content in it. Summer Holiday is a great Classic from that era and has aged well, especially compared to other movies of that time.
