This Friday sees the release of the long-awaited 3D film, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. This ‘feature biopic’ documents the 16-year-old pop star’s life, including his infamous performance in New York’s Madison Square Gardens.
As Bieber Fever begins to takes its grip on the nation, we give you an A to Z of the teeny-bopping pop idol who is set to become a big screen sensation.
A – Age
At just sixteen, Bieber’s one of the music industry’s youngest stars. His album, My World 2.0, debuted at number one in US charts, making Bieber the youngest male solo act to top the chart since Stevie Wonder back in 1963.
B – Baby
No, no, he hasn’t had one – he practically still is one – but we’re actually referring to the title of Bieber’s biggest hit thus far. Baby was released early last year, and featured Chipmunk on the official UK remix.
C – Crowd Control Well we could have gone with the obvious and told you that Bieber hails from Canada, but the insane crowd control problems that seem to accompany his public appearances are clearly much more interesting. Shows in Long Island and Australia had to be cancelled after several fans were crushed, and a record label executive was even arrested for reportedly hindering the police’s crowd control efforts by not sending a message on Twitter, as had been requested.
D – Dance Moves
What can we say – the boy can throw some shapes. You can see A Complete Guide to Justin Bieber’s Dance Moves here.
E – Eenie Meenie
Bieber collaborated with Sean Kingston on the single Eenie Meenie, which also appears on his album. The video featured appearances from Bieber’s friend Christian Beadles, as well as rapper Lil Romeo and singer/actress Jasmine Villegas.
F – Fans
Bieber’s fans, who refer to themselves as ‘Beliebers’ are notoriously devoted (read: obsessed), many of whom have set up fan sites dedicated to the teen heart-throb.
G – Grammy Awards
The 53rd annual Grammy Awards were held on 13th February this year, where Biber performed Baby but missed out on the Best New Artist award to lesser-known jazz musician Esperanza Spalding.
H – Hair
Aside from the singing, Justin Bieber’s hair’s pretty much his thing. When he recently changed his signature hairstyle it made headlines, and US chat show host Ellen DeGeneres had her birthday wish granted when Bieber presented her with a lock of his famous hair.
I – Island Records
Bieber originally signed to Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG), a joint venture between Scooter Braun and Usher. Usher then arranged an audition with Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid of Island Def Jam Music Group, who signed Bieber to his current label, Island Records, in October 2008.
J – Jason McCann
Last year, Bieber guest-starred as Jason McCann in CBS crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, appearing in a number of episodes (some of which are yet to air).
K – Kim Kardashian
The Beliebers are a feisty lot, and occasionally make personal attacks and slanderous remarks about anyone that the press claims could be romantically linked to the Bieber. Lovely. Socialite and reality television star Kim Kardashian was one such lucky lady, receiving death threats after occasions when the pair have been pictured together.
L – Ludacris
American rapper and actor Ludacris also featured on Bieber’s hit song Baby, with his rap including lyrics such as “She had me goin’ crazy/Oh I was starstruck/She woke me up daily/Don’t need no Starbucks.”
M – My World
My World 2.0 is, of course, the name of of Bieber’s platinum selling album. It was followed by his first headlining tour, My World Tour (which we’ll get to in a bit…) and an remix album, My Worlds Acoustic.
N – Never Say Never
Did we mention that Bieber’s got a film out? Never Say Never comes from Step Up director Jon Chu, and features guest appearances from Miley Cyrus, Jaden Smith and Snoop Dogg, to name but a few…
O – One Time
What do you mean, Baby wasn’t his first song?! That’s right, Bieber’s début track was, in fact, One Time – which is a “moderately paced…ode to young love”, apparently.
P – Precocious
Now we’re not saying this is our opinion (so you can put away your hate mail stationary sets…) but SOME people seem to have come to this conclusion about the teenage superstar. Notably, radio DJ Scott Mills said, “Someone needs to have a word with him. He’s a precocious little brat.” Just saying.
Q – Quake
An earthquake, to be precise. Bieber was invited to be a vocalist on the rerecording of We Are The World, in order to raise money for Haiti after it was devastated by an earthquake. Bieber sings the opening line, which was sung by Lionel Richie in the original version.
R – Record Breaker
If Kriss Akabusi and Cheryl Baker were still teaming up for their weekly coverage of world record breaking, then Bieber would get a mention on every show. From video views, to Twitter followers, or youngest recording artist ever…. you get the idea; he’s broken a lot of records.
S – Selena Gomez
Rumours that Bieber is dating Disney Channel actress and singer have been flying about since December – and the Beliebers aren’t happy.
T – Twitter
Bieber is certainly an enthusiastic tweeter, as are his fans. In September 2010, it was reported that Bieber accounted for 3% of all traffic on the social networking site. Crazy.
U – Usher
US recording artist Usher is often credited with discovering Bieber, along with Scooter Braun, and has since acted as something of a mentor to the young popstar.
V – Nail Varnish
Last October, Bieber (bizarrely) released his own One More Lonely Girl collection of nail varnishes with OPI, in order to raise money for the charity ‘Pencils of Promise’, who build schools in developing countries. Of course, being Canadian, he probably calls it Nail Polish, which doesn’t begin with a V at all. Whatever.
W – World Tour
Bieber’s world tour became the subject of an online prank, after a competition was launched to nominate a bonus country where he would perform. After an online campaign, North Korea won, despite the fact it was extremely unlikely that Bieber would have been granted permission to enter the country by the North Korean government, not to mention his concert management team. Universal Music Group reportedly stated that they believed the outcome to be a hoax.
X – X Factor
Bieber performed in week 8 of the 7th series of The X Factor in the UK, where he cheekily flirted with judge, Cheryl Cole.
Y – YouTube
The singer certainly has a long-standing connection with the video-sharing website. Not only was Bieber first spotted by Braun in videos that he had uploaded of himself singing, but he also managed to de-throne Lady Gaga when the video for Baby became the most viewed video of all time.
Z – Jay Z
Bieber has been rumoured to appear on Usher’s updated version of his album Raymond Vs. Raymond for some time, and now it seems he will be joined on the record by none other than rapper Jay Z. Oh and Enrique Inglesias.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never hits UK cinemas in 18th February 2011.
