This week sees the release of The Roomate. To be honest it’s had some pretty terrible reviews and there’s not much to say about it other than it’s a terrible rip off of Single White Female. What is worth mentioning is that it stars Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester who is trying to make her move from the small screen to the big screen. It seems it hasn’t been quite as successful as she had hoped. We take a look at those who have managed to turn soap into stars.

Top ten TV-to-movie stars, 4.5 out of 5 based on 4 ratings

George Clooney
George originally set hearts a flutter playing Dr Doug Ross in the hugely successful ER for a whopping five years. He wasn't long after he hung up his scrubs that he became one of the highest earning actors in Hollywood, with hits such as Ocean's Eleven and Batman & Robin . He even won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Syriana leaving TV well and truly behind, apart from when he returned to guest star in ER for the final season. Ahh, we like a man who doesn't forget his humble medical-drama roots.

Robin Williams
It's funny to think this huge actor and comedian started out in the slightly bizarre TV series Mork and Mindy in which he played an alien. His career really did rocket from there, as he won countless awards including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his part in Good Will Hunting , two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammy Awards. Phew! It's not surprising really though for a man who had now iconic roles in Mrs. Doubtfire and Good Morning, Vietnam .

Isla Fisher
We had to put Isla in as a representative of all those soap stars from down under who have successfully made the move to Hollywood, such as Guy Pearce and Heath Ledger. Isla started out on the short lived soap Paradise Beach, before moving on to Home and Away and just when it looked like she'd be stuck in soap land forever, she crashed onto the scene with Wedding Crashers and has had us laughing ever since.

James McAvoy
Now a hugely successfully Scot in the big bad world of LA, James has played a great range of excellent roles from The Last King of Scotland to Starter for 10 and has had on screen sex scenes with the likes of Angelina Jolie and Keira Knightley. It doesn't get much better than that, does it? It is pretty remarkable then that this average-looking bloke started out on the streets of Shameless.

Will Smith
Big Willy was once described as the most powerful actor on the planet, no joke. And this is a man who started out on the TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air , albeit a really popular one. It wasn't exactly a serious show though and what with his rather laughable rap career under the name of The Fresh Prince, he could have been trapped on TV forever. Instead he became the only actor in history to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box office, with hits such as Independence Day , Men in Black and Enemy of the State . He has also spawned some super kids who will ensure the Smith name continues for quite a while more.

Catherine Zeta-Jones
We could have gone for some American star like Jennifer Anniston, who of course went from doing Friends to a whole range of crap big-screen rom-coms, but we thought it would be better to represent those on this side of the pond. Despite having a whole list of Hollywood hits under her belt, including Chicago and The Mask of Zorro and been married to part of the acting elite, Michael Douglas, people still remember her as the fresh faced beauty in the TV show The Darling Buds of May. It just goes you to show, you can take a girl out of Britain, but you can't the Brit out a girl.

Michael Cera
This Canadian geek is known for playing, well, a geek in a selection of films including Juno, Superbad and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World . You may be surprised to hear that before that he played a super cool stud in a TV show. Just kidding, he actually rose to fame playing, yup, you guessed it, a geek in hit show Arrested Development .

Farrah Fawcett
The image of Farrah in a red one-piece bathing suit is one of the most iconic images of all time. After playing Jill Munroe in the original TV series Charlie's Angels , Farrah became a sex symbol. Apart from being pop culture icon and having that famous hairdo, which is still emulated, she went on to forge a long and successful career in films right up to losing her fight to cancer in 2009.

Ashton Kutcher
We first noticed Ashton's pretty face in the sitcom That 70s Show. It wasn't long until others noticed it too and despite the fact that he can't really act, he has gone on to star in a number of films, including What Happens in Vegas and Dude, Where's My Car. He also bagged himself an actress wife in the form of the legendary, Demi Moore.

James Franco
For a man who hosted the Oscars this year, has been nominated for various awards and is widely considered to be one of the finest actors of his generation, it is remarkable that he started out in the short-lived TV show Freaks and Geeks (which was actually amazing, btw). Some of his film credits include 127 Hours , Milk and Spider-Man .
