SAG Awards 2014

12 Years a Slave, which was directed by British filmmaker Steve McQueen, is tipped for Oscar glory this awards season, and its four SAG nominations reflect this. Not only is the cast up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o are in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Male and Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

The film will be up against American Hustle, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club and Lee Daniels’ The Butler (usually known as simply, The Butler) for Cast in a Motion Picture.

The nominations for the Outstanding Performance by a Male and Female Actor in a Leading Role categories are fairly predictable for this year. Chiwetel Ejiofor is up against Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and Forest Whitaker for his role in The Butler. Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role is between Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) and Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks.

Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), June Squibb (Nebraska), Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), James Gandolfini (Enough Said) and Daniel Bruhl (Rush) are also hoping to take home the awards for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role.

In the television section, Downton Abbey is up for two awards: Maggie Smith for Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, and the entire ensemble for Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Meanwhile Breaking Bad is up for awards for Ensemble, Performance by a Female Actor (Anna Gunn), Performance by a Male Actor (Bryan Cranston) and Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.
