Aardman Studios, founded by Nick Aardman, are responsible for bringing you the epitome of stop-motion British film – Wallace and Gromit, in addition to Chicken Run and other works. Now? Pirates! And… Hugh Grant?
Yeah, so, Hugh Grant. Hugh Grant. He’s not everyone’s favourite actor, and many people seem to find him a loveable rogue in films, and a less loveable rogue off-set. However, you can’t fault anyone for wanting to play a stop-motion-animated pirate brought to life by the same people who brought you the most communicative plasticine dog in film, can you?
The film is called, and I’m not kidding, The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists, based on the book of the same name by author Gideon Defoe. There’s a lot of voice talent popping up in this particular production, from Grant to Martin Freeman, currently The Luckiest Actor On Earth due to his role as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Also making an appearance are Brendan Gleeson (Gangs of New York, In Bruges), Russell Tovey (The History Boys, Being Human), Ashley Jensen (Extras, Ugly Betty), Salma Hayek (Dogma, Wild Wild West), Jeremy Piven (Smokin’ Aces, Entourage) and even David Tennant (Doctor Who, Doctor Who).
Pirate Captain (straightforward name, amirite?) and his motley crew come roaring over the waves from Blood Island to London in order to do a bit of kidnapping. Funnily enough, it’s not a quick job, and there’ll be physical comedy and British wit in abundance throughout the family romp. It looks like a good’un, so break out The Wrong Trousers and catch up on your Aardman! More on this as it develops.
