Cannes Opening Night, who wore what?

The film festival kicked off last night with the showing of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. Apparently the auditorium was only half full and the mood was not the excited buzz that was expected.
What did set people off however was the red carpet fashion. That’s basically the best part of opening night  isn’t it?
So, lets start with Cate Blanchett, Russell ‘Robin Hood’ Crowe’s female lead. Her dress had the wow factor and had people tweeting about it all over the world in seconds. She wore a black and silver Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2010 gown, which featured an eagle motif and tulle underlay. It was a touching nod towards the late designer as the dress will be seen and talked about by millions. She went for an up do with understated makeup and jewellery but still looked every inch the Hollywood star she is.
Her co-star Russel, on the other hand, looked, well, why he felt the need to wear sunglasses on the red carpet of the world’s most prestigious film event, god only knows.
Kate Beckinsale, who is a judge on this years panel, also made a nod towards British designers. She made sure she was noticed in a absolutley stunning Marchesa  lavendar draped gown, which looked slightly grecian on the top half and then turned into a tulle layered skirt with a small train on the end. The top half of the dress was embellished with sparkles. Kate’s hair was very Audrey Hepburn-esque and her drop earrings polished of the look perfectly .
Another familiar face on the red carpet was our favourite Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria. She also went for a full length gown, wearing a full length cream Emilio Pucci dress. It looked a little like a wedding dress but was stunning none the less. Her makeup was very on trend, peachy, pinky tones that worked really well with her drop earrings.
Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai carried on the long dress theme in an elegant violet blue fully emboridered tulle and mousseline gown by Elie Saab. Like Kate she had a bouffant hair style that really added to the glamourous look she was rocking.
So that was last night’s main contenders for the Cannes style awards. Who do you think looked good and who made a bit of a faux pas? Who needs the films when we have got such fanciful fashion on the red carpet?
