Carey Mulligan to play The Great Gatsby’s Daisy?

Artistic Aussie director Baz Luhrmann is taking on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby.

The flamboyant director who gave us Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet, has apparently already cast his two male leads – Leornado DiCaprio as Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Carraway.

The big question is who will play the lead female, Daisy. It has been reported that Rebecca Hall is really keen to play the part and has already auditioned. Kiera Knightley, Blake Lively and Michelle Williams are other names that have also been bandied about.

However today’s gossip websites are saying that it is Brit Carey Mulligan who has actually caught Luhrmann’s eyes.

Mulligan gained fame for her role in An Education for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Most recently she starred in Wall Street: Money never sleeps. She is currently filming Drive with Ryan Gosling. The film is about a Hollywood stunt driver (Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver in heists. Mulligan plays his ex girlfriend.

Mulligan is certainly the lady of the moment, but does she have what it takes to play Daisy? The novel has been made into a film previously, with Mia Farrow playing Daisy. The 1974 film also stars Robert Redford as Gatsby and Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway.

The Great Gatsby is the story of a young midwestener, Carraway who has moved to Long Island and finds himself drawn into the nouveau riche Gatsby’s extraordinary past and present.

We don’t know about you lot, but we love a bit of Baz Lurhmann and it’s a great story with lots of excuses for great outfits. Who would you like to see play the leading lady though?
