British costume drama, Downton Abbey could be headed to Hollywood soon, if rumours are true. Anyone fancy Downton Abbey: The Movie?
The US is mad for all things Downton! The show has just won a Golden Globe for Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television and could very well become a motion picture, if Hollywood gets its way.
Show creator, Julian Fellowes was approached at all angles from film makers and actors, all keen to discuss the show and its future endeavours. He remained tight lipped on the subject though, insisting that while he has been approached about a film, he would have to give the idea a lot of thought.
In all honesty, a film probably wouldn’t benefit the show. What would the average fan gain, that they don’t already have? Besides a larger screen? How would it be different to any other period film, except for having a critically acclaimed name attached to it?
If it was to happen, Fellowes wouldn’t be out of his depth. He’s had film success with the extremely British (despite being directed by an American) and charming Gosford Park. The 2001 film starred Maggie Smith and won him a well deserved Oscar for the screenplay.
What is it about the show, which airs on PBS alongside the BBC’s Sherlock, that appeals to a US audience though?
“I think they love the drama and the intrigue, and they also love the solidity of the life — that you’re free of mobile phones and Twitter,” Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern said.
Or perhaps it is the presence of US actress McGovern herself, that boosts its appeal?
Either way a film can’t happen until series three has been completed anyway. So what do you think? Would a film be a good idea, or should it be left on the small screen?
