The full list of nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2014 (BAFTA) were announced this morning. Gravity is leading the fray with 11 nominations, but is closely followed by 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle with ten nominations each.

BAFTA 2014 nominations

While it might appear that certain films are dominating this year, when you look through the full list there’s a vast spread of both British and international films in contention. Philomena, Captain Phillips, Rush, The Wolf of Wall Street, Nebraska, August: Osage County, Inside Llewyn Davis, Blue Jasmine and even The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have received nods from the British Academy.

Most nominated film Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, is up for Best Film and Outstanding British Film, but has also been acknowledged in the Director, Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Edit, Production Design, Sound and Special Effects categories. Its leading lady Sandra Bullock is nominated for Leading Actress.

Gravity will be up against 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Philomena for Best Film. The Outstanding British Film category also looks competitive with Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Philomena, Rush, Saving Mr Banks and The Selfish Giant also nominated.

12 Years a Slave is the film everyone is talking about though. Directed by Steve McQueen, its unflinching portrayal of the reality of slavery in the Deep South has garnered acknowledgements in the Director, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing and Production Design categories. Meanwhile three of its actors are nominated for their performances: Chiwetel Ejiofor for Leading Actor, Michael Fassbender for Supporting Actor and Lupita Nyong’o for Supporting Actress.

The acting categories are extremely competitive this year with no real front runners to safely predict the result:

Chiwetel Ejiofor is up against Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Christian Bale (American Hustle), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips). Sandra Bullock will be seeing off competition from fellow Leading Actress nominees: Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks) and Judi Dench (Philomena). It’s a difficult one to call…

Michael Fassbender is nominated against Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Daniel Bruhl (Rush) and Matt Damon (Behind the Candelabra) for Supporting Actor. Lupita Nyong’o is named along side Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), Oprah Winfrey (The Butler) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine).
