It has been confirmed that Gemma Arterton has been cast opposite Jeremy Renner in the upcoming film, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
We thought it would be Noomi Rapace! We thought it might be Eva Green! But finally it has been confirmed that British actress Gemma Arterton, would take on the role of Gretel in this dark adaptation of the classic fairy tale.
Arterton received much critical acclaim for her role in last year’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, where she starred alongside the lovely Jake Gyllenhaal. She then went on to take the title role in the painfully less-than-well-received Tamara Drewe.
But 2011 could well be the year that sees her return to form in what appears to be being described as an action-horror-comedy film, directed by Tommy Wirkola. Witch Hunters tells the story of a much older Hansel and Gretel who, apparently undeterred by their original Brothers Grimm witch encounter, have become ruthless witch hunters.
Of course, the story of the Brothers Grimm themselves also graced our screens not so long ago. The 2005 fantasy comedy from Monty Python director Terry Gilliam saw Matt Damon and Heath Ledger take on the roles of the now-legendary brothers – without whom we presumably wouldn’t have this recent spurge of slightly darker adaptations, which so far also include Snow White and the Huntsman, as well as Red Riding Hood.
Playing the Hansel to Arterton’s Gretel is US actor and musician Jeremy Renner, who won numerous awards for his performance in 2009’s The Hurt Locker, and was heavily nominated for his role in Ben Affleck’s The Town.
Norwegian filmmaker Wirkola is no stranger to horror-comedies, and this time around he’s even got Will Ferrell and Adam McKay on board as producers. Exciting!
Filming is scheduled to begin in March – we’ll keep you posted!
