In a world of generic blockbusters with more explosions than plot points, few filmmakers take imaginative but everyday settings and fill them with quirky characters quite like Wes Anderson. And his latest film The Grand Budapest Hotel is no exception. The second trailer for the 2014 release can be found here.
While the first trailer established the basic plot of The Grand Budapest Hotel – set in a famous European hotel, the story centres around the concierge Gustav H. (Ralph Fiennes) who is accused of killing a wealthy guest, and his lobby boy and most trusted friend Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori) – the second trailer has a different purpose.
In 90 seconds we are introduced by name to a dozen eccentric characters, from Tilda Swinton’s Madame D. to Edward Norton’s Henckels. Other actors who feature in the new trailer for Fox Searchlight’s new release include, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Jude Law, Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody and Harvey Keitel.
Somehow I think films like Love Actually, Valentines Day, New Year’s Eve and even the Lord of the Rings trilogy could have done with a trailer which listed the characters by name. At least then you go in to the screening prepared for the large ensemble.
Then again if The Royal Tannenbaums, Fantastic Mr Fox and Moonrise Kingdom are anything to go by, Wes Anderson’s film will always be overpopulated by A-Listers in crazy situations. You don’t go in expecting simplicity.
The “American empirical picture,” as The Grand Budapest Hotel has been called in the trailer, is to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February, before general cinema release in the UK, 7 March 2014.
