As filming begins for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the final cast members are being confirmed – the latest being Kristin Davis.
The Sex and the City star will join Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, to play the parents of Journey to the Centre of the Earth‘s only returning character, Sean Anderson. Johnson takes over from Brendan Fraser in the role of Anderson’s father, whilst Anderson himself will continue to be played by Josh Hutcherson. Vanessa Hudgens is also on board, playing his love interest.
Possibly the most exciting cast member is cinematic veteran Michael Caine, who will play Anderson’s missing grandfather, who provides the catalyst for the adventures of this sequel . Like the previous Journey film, The Mysterious Island is loosely based around a Jules Verne novel. However, Richard Outten’s original script for this sequel also has elements of two other classics: Treasure Island and Gulliver’s Travels.
This film will also be shot in 3D and distributed by Warner Bros’ New Line Cinema. Davis’ last films – Couples Retreat and Sex and the City 2 – may not have had huge commercial success, but it’s more than likely that this was down to some dodgy scripting, rather than lack of talent. With Tom Hanks’ prodigy Brad Peyton on board to direct, could this follow-up film do as well as its predecessor, which made over $240 million in worldwide sales last year? We’ll keep you posted!
