Remember Pete and Debbie from Knocked Up? She was the sister of Katherine Heigl’s character and he was her talent-scout husband. During the film, Debbie’s controlling ways and Pete’s lack of responsibility gave main character Alison Scott cause for doubt about marriage. However, it looks as though they have made it, to 40 at least.
Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann will be reprising their roles as the hapless couple, who after having a family find themselves in a bittersweet rut.
This looks a lot like the standard generic comedy so much in abundance these days, especially when you take into account the addition of Jason Segel, Chris O’Dowd and Megan Fox to the cast. All are pretty much comedy veterans and it sounds like another Bridesmaids/Friends With Kids/The Five Year Engagement waiting to happen. Also playing a role will be Lena Dunham, creator of hit HBO series Girls and dramedy Tiny Furniture.
By the looks of the trailer, there will be some laughs and some tears, as well as plenty of truly cringe-worthy moments. The question could be asked whether another film like this is really necessary, as it’s unlikely to bring anything new into the cinema. However, these types of flicks do tend to get it right with good old-fashioned entertainment value, comedy and heart-warming endings, so we’ll see whether this one lives up to the list of famous names who are involved.
It is produced by Judd Apatow, who is responsible for an unending list of comedies, with The Five Year Engagement, Bridesmaids, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, Get Him to the Greek and Girls as just the tip of the hilarious ice-berg. If you want to create another film like these that’s sure to get bums on cinema seats, then he is definitely the right man for the job.
This Is 40 is due for a UK release on 14th February 2013 – which is funnily enough just in time for Valentine’s Day. It does look like a pretty safe film to take your date to, as long as you’re not both 40 years old and getting tired of marriage…
