Edward Norton won’t be playing the Incredible Hulk in the anticipated Summer 2012 Marvel comic blockbuster, The Avengers. In an open letter to his fans on Facebook, Norton admitted to being ‘sad’ about the change.
The trouble with the endless wave of comic book (or specifically, Marvel) films flooding into cinemas over the last decade, is that it’s tough to find an adaptation that totally satisfies the fans. However, the only comic book adaptation of a major character (apologies to Punisher, but let’s be honest) that really seemed to struggle was the Hulk.
It’s an odd, as the Hulk’s a fairly straightforward film to make. Bloke gets zapped with radiation, gets angry, turns into bigger, greener bloke, smash, jump, evade military, calm down, hide, get angry, repeat. However, Bana and Norton both tried to take it in a very serious, psychologically deep direction, and box office reactions were unfavourable.
It’s a shame for Fight Club star Norton, as he’s probably wondering why his “small man gets mad” schtick didn’t cut the mustard this time around. However, it also means a new leading man, and with that comes endless geeky speculation!
Marvel had this to say: “We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members.”
Zing. We’ll see who ends up playing the big green fella, but for now, my money’s on R-Patz. No one does moody like Mr. Bloodsucker himself. Or even Taylor Lautner. Damn it, get the Twilight cast in here! We need a moody, pouting leading male with a dark, violent alter-ego!
