Streep is taking on the role for The Iron Lady, a film which tells the story of Lady Thatcher’s career up until she took the UK to war in the Falklands in 1982. Despite people’s issues with her policies, it can not be denied that hers is a compelling story of a woman who succeeded in a very male dominated world. She was, and still is, a fascinating character.
Speaking about playing the former Prime Minister, Streep said:
“The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge. I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!”
Streep will be joined by Jim Broadbent who is playing husband Dennis. The rest of the cast is equally as strong, and includes Anthony Head, Richard E. Grant and Roger Allam. The younger Maggie and Dennis are played by Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd.
Filming of The Iron Lady began in the UK at the end of January and it is expected to out by the end of this year.
