Paul Giamatti, known for appearing in Saving Private Ryan, The Illusionist and Cinderella Man will be joining the cast of Carlo Carlei’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet.
Giamatti will be playing Friar Laurence, the character who is integral to major developments of the plot and serves as advisor to the young couple (actors pictured above).
William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy has been adapted many times, including the classic 1968 version from Franco Zeffirelli with and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 updated version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Now, Italian director Carlo Carlei is trying his hand at recreating the magic of the classic story about the star-crossed lovers and their feuding families.
It looks as though this adaptation is trying its best to be ‘age-appropriate’, with the 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld playing Juliet, who Shakespeare wrote as being 13. Steinfeld has been nominated for the Oscar of best supporting actress for her role in True Grit as Mattie Ross. Romeo will be played by Douglas Booth, a 19-year-old British actor who has appeared in TV series The Pillars of the Earth and is set to take the role of Pip in the upcoming BBC adaptation of Great Expectations.
Carlei’s version of Romeo & Juliet will be filmed in the city of Mantua, Italy, where Romeo is actually banished to in Shakespeare’s play and we’ll keep you updated on any developments.
