Absolutely Fabulous The Movie has always been a question of when rather than if and Jennifer Saunders has finally put the rumours to rest. She is finally set to write Eddie and Patsy’s big screen adventures. Someone grab the Champers!
The woman behind the brilliant sitcom revealed the news on the Jonathan Ross Show recently, but while you might suspect she’s doing it for the chance to revisit the characters and please the devoted worldwide audience, her reasoning may surprise you.
It turns out she’s threatened to do it so many times that “well I have to do it now…”
It’s true. The rumours have all been fuelled by both Jennifer Saunders and her co-star Joanna Lumley recently, despite the fact she had said a while back that a movie would never happen. Make your mind up, madam!
“She [Joanna] kept announcing it and saying, ‘Yes, she’s going to do it,’ and then Dawn French on our radio show at Christmas said, ‘I bet £100,000 that you don’t write it,’ so now I have to write it, otherwise I have to pay her £100,000.”
Potentially losing £100,000 is a good way to get any procrastinator to move ahead with a project and stop putting it off.
“I am the worst procrastinator in the world,” she admits, and the fact that she will be writing it alone, also doesn’t help matters. It’s a lot of pressure when there’s so much expectation and anticipation.
“It’s like the second album syndrome. Once you’ve had a bit of success, the last thing you want to do is go and make a flop. So the biggest fear in me is that it won’t be good enough,” Jennifer said. “I’m really nervous about it.”
Jennifer was a guest on the Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday 4 January. You can catch up on ITV Player.
