The trailer has been released for The Roommate, starring Gossip Girl‘s Leigton Meester.
She might have made her name playing the Queen B aka Blair Waldorf in US TV drama Gossip Girl, but let’s not forget that Miss Meester has been known to venture on to the big screen occasionally. Last year she appeared alongside Steve Carell and Tina Fey in the comedy film, Date Night, sharing the screen with Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong.
This year, Meester takes on a lead role in Danish filmmaker Christian E. Christiansen’s The Roommate, playing world’s-worst-roommate to (500) Days of Summer actress, Minka Kelly. Upon moving to university, Sara Matthews (Kelly) finds she is sharing a room with fellow student Rebecca Evans (Meester). Evans seems normal at first, but soon reveals a much darker side, and some suitably-psycho antics ensue. The film also stars Cam Gigandet, who you may recognise from the likes of Twilight, Easy A and Burlesque, as well as fellow Easy A cast member Alyson Michalka.
The trailer’s not bad, but The Roommate certainly doesn’t look like anything we haven’t seen before. Rolling Stone‘s Peter Travers described the film as “the umpteenth uncredited remake of 1992’s Single White Female” – and, by all accounts, there are numerous plot similarities and scene parallels between the two.
Meester’s not exactly branching out with this one either, having starred in the self-explanatory TV teen-horror film The Haunting of Sorority Row, back in 2007. That said, we can look forward to seeing her in upcoming romantic comedies The Oranges and Monte Carlo later this year – so y’know, that’s different.
Anyway, you can check out the trailer for The Roommate below, which we can expect to see in cinemas on the 15th April this year.
