Sequels continue to command box office takings, as Underworld: Awakening tops the US weekend box office … again.
The sci-fi vampire series has already released three hit films since it premièred in 2003: Underworld, Underworld Evolution and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Now Kate Beckinsale is back, fangs and all for another adventure. The franchise took $25.4 million in its first weekend in the US alone.
Underworld is not the only franchise to be churning out sequels. It seems to be Hollywood’s safe plan against loss in this global climate: rehashing ideas that have already proved to be a hit in the past. Other sequels include, Sherlock: A Game of Shadows and the brand new Men in Black 3, that will premiere this summer.
It comes as no surprise that the film has received success in the middle of January. The last three Underworld’s have used this release slot to boost its box office earnings, in the month where winter blockbusters have been replaced by Oscar contenders. It has also been three years since the last, so it was right on schedule.
So what’s the plot of Underworld: Awakening? When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene (Beckinsale) must lead the battle against humankind.
Sounds serious. Kate who has played Selene in all four films has been having lots of success recently. Underworld: Awakening is her second film to début at number one in the last few weeks alone. She is also starring in Contraband, opposite Mark Wahlberg, a film that currently sits comfortably at number three with a US box office earning of $12.2 million this week.
Meanwhile, Red Tails rounded out the top three this week, by settling at number two with $19.1 million in ticket sales.
Underworld: Awakening is in cinemas across the UK now!
