The Avengers fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The director of the epic first movie, Joss Whedon is going to write and direct the sequel too!
You may remember that back in May, we reported Joss Whedon was dilly dallying over the idea of coming back to direct the Avengers Assemble (as it was named in the UK) sequel. At the time he told the The Los Angeles Times:
“You know, I’m very torn. It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it.”
We can officially confirm that he’s made his decision though, with Marvel announcing that the man behind the TV hits Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has signed on the dotted line. Apparently negotiations between the studio and Joss Whedon worked in the latter’s favour, because it’s thought the director has been granted a significant pay rise.
And deservedly so! I think it’s safe to say, every Avengers fanboy and girl is grateful he’s dedicated himself to putting this “enormous amount of work” into someone else’s story, because he clearly knows what he’s doing.
And if Variety is to be believed, this won’t be his only project within the Marvel world. Apparently he’s to develop a live action TV series too, although we don’t know which Marvel characters will be involved.
So far we haven’t been given a release date for The Avengers 2, but we like to think it’ll be with us by at least 2015. You know, so the sequels to every other Marvel movie can be seen first and the likes of the Iron Man and Captain America stories stories can be pushed along a bit.
We’ll keep you posted.
