The Hollywood rumour mill is working it’s magic, with whispers of the long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice finally being on the way. Star of Tim Burton’s original, Winona Ryder has strongly hinted of her potential involvement.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!” Chanting his name three times in the hope that Tim Burton will make the much talked about sequel to the 80s classic hasn’t worked up until now. Perhaps fortunes are changing though. Winona Ryder hasn’t given away any details exactly, but she did hint at her return to the role.
“I’m kind of sworn to secrecy,” she said in a recent interview with The Daily Beast, “but it sounds like it might be happening.”
Naturally we’re all intrigued by how a new film would play out. Burton isn’t known for making sequels to his movies. In fact, he seems to have too many ideas to even consider returning to one (apart from Frankenweenie). So what would a new Beetlejuice be? Is it a sequel? Is it a remake of the original? Who will be in it? Is Tim Burton still behind it?
Ryder was happy to give a few answers to these questions, fortunately.
“It’s not a remake, it’s 27 years later,” she explains. “And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”
So would we, to be honest. There are plenty of movie characters dull enough to be left alone to gather dust, but Ryder’s Lydia is not one of them. Of course, much as she may love her character, Ryder admits that her prospective return would not be in talks if it weren’t for the involvement of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton.
“I would never go near it if it was not Tim and Michael, because those guys, I love.”
It’s still early days so we can’t start dancing around chanting “Beetlejuice” just yet, but from these details, things look likely to come together.
How do you feel about a prospective Beetlejuice sequel?
